“Fascists Not Welcome”

Thousands Protest Trump Visit to Synagogue Where 11 People Were Killed

| Revolution Newspaper | revcom.us

On Tuesday, October 30, Trump made an official visit to the synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh where 11 people were killed in worship in a Nazi-style attack three days earlier. As revcom.us noted, Trump had initially responded to the attack and mass murder “with pro forma denunciation that was quickly accompanied by calls for more armed security and the death penalty as a way to deal with this—these are reactionary and fascist watchwords.”

Thousands of people—many Jewish but also people of different backgrounds and nationalities—marched to show their outrage at Trump’s hypocritical visit—CNN reported that for the protestors, “sadness has turned into anger.” The local ABC news said that a Presbyterian minister, “who lives down the street from the synagogue, was among those shouting and holding banners—and she encouraged other neighbors, including children, to join her.” Many held signs saying “No Place for Hate Squirrel Hill”; other signs included: “Words Matter”; “Nazi Trump Fuck Off”; and “Hate Speech Incites Violence, Fascists Not Welcome.”

A line of police stopped the marchers a block away from the synagogue. When police sirens indicated Trump had arrived, many protestors turned their backs as a show of rejection of Trump. In an open letter to Trump, the Pittsburgh affiliate of the group Bend the Arc, a national organization for progressive Jews focused on social justice, said in part: “Our Jewish community is not the only group you have targeted. You have also deliberately undermined the safety of people of color, Muslims, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities. Yesterday’s massacre is not the first act of terror you incited against a minority group in our country.”
