I am delighted to support the Dialogue between Cornel West and Bob Avakian—and I want to encourage everyone who can to go and participate in what will be an enlightening experience.

Among other things, this dialogue will help address the neo-McCarthyistic pressure—developing in the U.S. media, the political environment, the judiciary (the Supreme Court in particular) and educational areas. It is stifling criticism of right-wing extremist religious efforts aimed at undermining rationality in not only the sciences but also in society in general e.g. anti-rationality.

Jefferson, Madison, Adams, Franklin and Paine warned against this sort of movement and recognized that it was intrinsically anti-democratic. The increasing political and societal influence of organizations promoting irrationally-based dogmas now poses the most dangerous threat to the survival of the Democratic process in the U.S. The Enlightened attitudes which have been vital factors in the development of modern society are under threat as never before and the forces propagating dogma-based attitudes are dragging us back into a new Dark Age which we must now confront with all our might.
