The Points of Attention & Organizing for Revolution

| revcom.us

  1. The Points of Attention embody the principles, methods, and goals of the revolution. The Points of Attention show what the revolution stands for and give a living sense of the new society that the revolution aims to bring into being, and they guide how we live and struggle today. When you get into these points, you begin to get into what the revolution is all about.
  2. In order to make a revolution, the masses must be organized. The Revolution Club is the organization that lives by and fights for the Points of Attention. Thousands of people right now can be part of spreading this in a way that builds up the broad sense in society that there IS an organization fighting for a radically different way and future. Those who agree with the Points of Attention and aspire to live by them should join and build the Revolution Club, today. When you spread these points, you are spreading the revolution and you are helping to build up the revolutionary organization of the people.
  3. The Revolution Club is where people can powerfully represent for the revolution, as they learn more about it. Learning about the revolution includes learning about the leadership and work of Bob Avakian, BA. Bob Avakian has developed the new communism, a further breakthrough on the path to emancipation, and he’s developed the strategy for revolution in the U.S. People everywhere need to know about this.

Points of Attention for the Revolution

The Revolution Club upholds, lives by and fights for the following principles:

1 We base ourselves on and strive to represent the highest interests of humanity: revolution and communism. We do not tolerate using the revolution for personal gain.

2 We fight for a world where ALL the chains are broken. Women, men, and differently gendered people are equals and comrades. We do not tolerate physically or verbally abusing women or treating them as sexual objects, nor do we tolerate insults or “jokes” about people’s gender or sexual orientation.

3 We fight for a world without borders, and for equality among different peoples, cultures and languages. We do not tolerate insults, “jokes” or derogatory names about a person’s race, nationality, or language.

4 We stand with the most oppressed and never lose sight of their potential to emancipate humanity—nor of our responsibility to lead them to do that. We work to win people of all backgrounds to take part in the revolution, and do not tolerate revenge among the people.

5 We search for and fight for the truth no matter how unpopular, even as we listen to and learn from the observations, insights and criticisms of others.

6 We are going for an actual overthrow of this system and a whole better way beyond the destructive, vicious conflicts of today between the people. Because we are serious, at this stage we do not initiate violence and we oppose all violence against the people and among the people.

In the Wake of the Nipsey Hussle Murder: The Struggle to ORGANIZE

| revcom.us

Three weeks after the murder of Nipsey Hussle, people continue to commemorate his death and discuss—and debate—the meaning of his life. People stream in from across the country to visit the Marathon Clothing store that Nipsey owned. From Los Angeles itself, groups of people from different “sets”—gangs that at one time, and in some cases still, are at odds with each other—come to pay respects. There is talk of another truce. Most of the people coming are Black people, some are Latino, a few are white or Asian.

This murder, in other words, was something like what HOW WE CAN WIN—How We Can Really Make Revolution calls a “jolt” to a whole section of people—in the sense that it caused “many people to question ... what they normally accept.” The National Revolution Tour, along with the Revolution Club in Los Angeles, has continued to be in the thick of this. As you walk through the streets you may see the Points of Attention for the Revolution posted in many places. When the Tour is out there you may sometimes see people intently watching a tablet with a film of Bob Avakian on it; the other day there was a truck that played Why We Need An Actual Revolution And How We Can Really Make Revolution, and the Tour has vowed to take this out much more often. Many people from the neighborhood are beginning to get a sense of this movement for revolution; there is interest, there is debate, and there is some opposition. Comrades with the Tour and Club are working to go further—to reach deeper in their agitation, to do better at putting the needs of the revolution before people and with them figuring out ways to participate, to do more to get BA out to people.

Most of all, they are striving to break down the divide between the revolution and the people who must be organized into this revolution, to bring people forward into the Revolution Club and to develop broader networks of support throughout the neighborhood, the area, and around the country. There is critical importance to breaking down the situation in which a lot of masses listen to the revcoms and may even be intrigued and inspired to some degree, but never quite get over the feeling that “those people” are doing things, have a radical perspective, may have a lot of insights and be challenging us to think in new ways, but... “they” are over there, and “we” aren’t part of that (even if they sincerely “wish us well” at times). Some of this is built into the whole way in which society is divided; but much of this can be and must be overcome.

The tour continues to work on this problem. New approaches are being developed and tested out. We are moving to put the problem before the masses themselves, involving them in solving it, in a whole different way. And there is a determination and plan to test these out, sum up the results, concentrate what is correct... and move forward.

We will continue to cover this on the revcom.us website. The reports that follow are more in the character of reporting on and interrogating recent experience, sifting for patterns and lessons with the aim of making breakthroughs. For, again, just getting a good response or even a phone number is not, and cannot be, the aim of those on this Tour. The aim—the urgent aim—of this Tour is to organize thousands into the revolution, on all different levels. To that end, we definitely invite your comments, criticisms, and wrangling. We will run some accounts today and some as the week goes on.

Two major vehicles for doing this in the immediate week are the effort to make the Points of Attention for the Revolution (POA) a major pole in the area (as part of the whole special effort on this) and a mass picnic, set for next Sunday, aiming to draw in people from all over the city and well beyond. Stay tuned, including this week, for more...

We went out to Crenshaw and Slauson going up to businesses and talking to people who we ran into on the street. Most of the businesses took flyers but wanted to ask the owner if we could put up a poster. There was one man that we met who A talked to, Spanish-speaking mainly, who took stacks of the POAs with him. One person stopped me after I gave him the POAs and said he wanted a shirt. That he wanted to represent for the revolution. I said that was very good. And that these POAs are what it means to represent for the revolution. I talked with him briefly about what a revolution was and why we need one. Two choices, either live with all this or make revolution.

And then I posed a problem to him: We have the strategy but we don’t have the people yet. Did he have some idea of how we could bring people together and where? He said, “Yeah, this is exactly what I am working on too, I am a community activist and these principles are what I am about.” He really seemed eager to work and wanted to lead others to do that but felt that he needed to learn more. So I told him about the film and could he bring other people together to learn about this. Because, like I said, we have what we need to make a revolution but people don’t know about it. He told me he was part of the biker gang that was at Nipsey’s funeral and that he has a house where the film can be shown and he’d really like it if the revolution could come and talk to people about it and I would bring a whole bunch of T-shirts for people to wear, including him. He gave me his number.

Another person stopping by, who hangs out on the street, was testing us. “Do you guys really know what a revolution is?” I said, “Yes, do you want me to tell you?” He said, “No, I’ll read this” and took the Points of Attention. And then as we were walking back he stopped us and said that somebody was talking with him about the revolution, but when he asked what did they mean by revolution, they didn’t answer the question... And said he wanted to know if WE knew what a revolution was. So we told him, using the description in the pamphlet [HOW WE CAN WIN]. He goes, “Yup, now that’s a revolution.” I told him briefly how in a revolutionary situation you need to have networks of people that are being led and could be quickly transformed into backbone forces for revolution. And in a country like this, you need millions of people. And what we are doing now with this national tour is to organize people like this and bring forward the necessary scientific leadership required to make this revolution. He posed the question of white people and aren’t they the problem? Christopher Columbus. Voting for Trump. I talked about how there was nothing in the human nature of white people that made them hate people of color. It’s conditioned by this system. No baby is born hating other people. He said that’s true. But if it’s not in the nature of white people, what DOES drive them to condition others to do this? I said, that is the right question and I showed him the film. And then I talked about the different places where we are going and the importance of this neighborhood. Where could we show this film here? How could we get it to other people? And then he started to get excited: “We could run an electric cord, here and get a TV and I could let other people know about it here in this neighborhood  and show it outside. “I know a lot of people.” He said, pointing to the strategy, “I’m with this. I’m with this.” He gave me his number.

Felt, at least for myself, a good straining yesterday to carry out that approach [to challenge people to get into this], be part of this, now. We have distributed POAs out there, telling people what they are part of in organizing for revolution, but yesterday felt more pushing for the engagement with what is in them ALONG WITH opening up space to put the have/don’t have to people.

In the parking lot I handed POAs to guys sitting in a car. Let them look at it, they asked what is this, briefy I said we are organizing for revolution to overthrow the system, look at these and tell me what you think. They were attracted to revolution, and overthrowing the system, and liked the “all people, all races coming together” vibe they got from it. One said, “Look at my skin tone. I know we need a revolution. I think this is good, this can bring people together. And maybe what’s happening here is a step. I don’t know if you know this, but we’re Bloods. Don’t know if you know what it means for us to be out here. For so long we’ve been at each other. Do you know I went to prison when I was 25 and my whole life before that I had been at war with Crips? I had to go to a federal penitentiary for 14 years to realize my whole Iife had been fighting people JUST LIKE ME. We were all in there together, and I had realized we’re the same and we’re in the same situation and yet we’re trying to kill each other.”

I kept re-posing that we need a real revolution, that the system has people here and all over the world in a mess, and yeah we got to bring people together, but it’s got to be for revolution, or no matter how many come together now, generations will come up with no future and the nightmare goes on. And that we have a way out, a leader with a strategy and plan for a new society, but we don’t have the thousands organized and we don’t know all the ways that can happen. We’re on tour to go to work on this throughout the country, but people like you are needed to find ways to build networks around these principles, and how do you see doing that? I also posed the example of someone pulling people together at their house to watch the BA film. What they gravitated toward now was helping spread the POAs, and invite to the picnic, and the posters/stickers of The System Has No Future.

Another guy was from New Jersey. Basically similar approach though I had less time with him.  Two things with him to note: 1) He talked about how much he feels what we’re saying and has thought about how messed up the world is. He tells people what they have learned is all wrong, and then doesn’t know what to do with that, how to lead people. He said he had to do a lot of work to unlearn what you get taught, and made analogies to unplugging from the matrix and that most people are still struck in the illusion. I posed what we have/don’t have in relation to this, that it does take work, we have a leader who is not a savior but who came out of a whole time and did the work to figure out how we could make revolution and a new society, that work has been done and is how people can become leaders themselves. And posed that we are on tour and need to get the thousands organized, and he should be figuring out how to pull people together around these POAs where he is and then reach out so the tour could link up in NJ. He had to go somewhere so he kind of scattered quickly but gave his info and said maybe we could link up before Tuesday when he goes back. 2) He mentioned not knowing much about Nipsey before he was killed, and then feeling like a voice was calling out from the grave to come. Struck him that Nip was 33 and he was 34, and it got him reflecting on what’s it all for.

There’s a contradiction between those hoping for something better to come out of this and, among others, a resignation that this is what happens to our best (and a contradiction among those that this is due to the system, however they understand that, or we do it to ourselves).

Among a number of people we’ve talked to, including many from out of town, there’s a deep sense that something serious, major, and fundamental has to change. That there’s no way out and it’s getting worse. You do run into people who are seriously thinking about revolution, in the sense of a fundamental change. A number of people have started the discussions we’ve had when we raise the idea of revolution  with what would be a wrong strategy and appreciate when we point to POA #6 and the fact that we are serious about winning vs. individual acts that would lead you to be crushed. I’ll usually put this back to people and they can see, “Yeah, that would lead you to be crushed.” And then it changes the discussion, raises their sights when we talk about what it would take to win.

I have had a couple people stop and read the POAs, or I’ve read some POAs to them and the response has been, “That’s beautiful,” or “That’s really positive.” But there’s a way people don’t get the whole of it, or the qualitative character. It’s different to have people go through the whole of it. What the comrade did yesterday—challenging/letting people read the POAs through themselves—is something we all need to learn from.

I have very consciously been putting the problem we face to people, especially in relation to tying together the “two choices” and breaking down the divide of us/them (that is, where the revolutionaries are over here organizing things, and the masses are over there, perhaps wishing them well and perhaps not, but not challenged or stimulated in the right way to get actively involved).

I’ve been stepping with “We’re on a national tour, etc.” A LOT of people say, “It’s so good you’re out here, doing something positive, fighting for what you believe.” I’ll usually say this is appreciated and try to learn why they think it’s positive, “We need change” or “We have to come together.” And I try to sharply and consciously pose the challenge, “That’s appreciated but insufficient.” Showing people the POAs, getting concretely into what we have and what we don’t have (showing and often giving people HOW WE CAN WIN)... and then posing it back to them, trying to say very clearly, these are the two choices, which will you choose? And letting people answer this. Some say, that’s a deep question and they have to think about it. Others say, they choose the revolution but need to find out more what we’re talking about, and still others say, yes, I’ll help spread this (usually on social media, etc). The particular form I’ve honed in on with a lot of people is spread these POAs on your social media (talking about the national effort), watch and post the BA clip and with people from out of town, to think seriously about organizing the Tour to come to your area.

We also have put to people what this speech from BA is and what about showing this to people. Some people have been interested in this, for example a woman from Lancaster. This has been in the context too of stating concretely what a revolution is, that it will take millions and the need to organize the thousands today who can lead those millions. And that one of the biggest problems we have is that people don’t know about all this, and what it can change in terms of people knowing about a real force for revolution.

I don’t think there’s a single script or formula, and I do think challenging that, “I appreciate you” sentiment is important (including putting it back to people sharply that no one is going to do this for us). But still, I think part of the problem perhaps is that this stays abstract for people. Instead of on the spot, getting inside these POAs and evaluating whether this would be important to be reaching others... and/or watching BA on the spot.

We had one experience yesterday of someone having a couple of concrete ideas about where we could show the film (including a community center across the street from the memorial site). Beyond that, I’ve asked a number of people for ideas they have, trying to work with them to answer this and they mainly say they don’t know... and this gets tied in to them looking into this more themselves. We have been putting to people that the best way to get into this more is to be part of getting into it with others, there too tied in with the two choices.

Disrupting a Christian Fascist Anti-Abortion Rally in Philly

| revcom.us

From a reader:

We found out about a “pro-life” demonstration being planned outside of a Planned Parenthood (PP) location in Center City (downtown) Philly. It was part of a coordinated blitz launched by Catholic Christian fascists organized under “Regnum Christi” and Mission Youth to target multiple PP locations across southeastern Pennsylvania on Good Friday. There was a sorry excuse of a counterprotest being organized that was attempting to wield the Bible to oppose the Bible, coupled with the ridiculous “Gritty” reification phenomenon.

The other Philly revcom supporters and those in our orbit here had obligations that prevented them from going, so I had to pull up solo. The night before, I drew up a simple (but large) poster with the following slogans:

THERE IS NO GOD
WOMEN ARE NOT INCUBATORS
ABORTION ON DEMAND W/O APOLOGY
#REVOLUTION—NOTHINGLESS
REVCOM.US

I brought some POAs [Points of Attention for the Revolution] and Calls for the Tour (both with local contact info) in my backpack just in case. When I arrived, there were only four counterprotesters. They had hung up a banner outside the PP location that read “Thank God for Abortion” and then they went to the other side of the intersection to spectate. A line of a dozen or so PP escorts stood at the front of the entrance and chose to remain silent and stationary. I chose to get right up front, putting on my REVOLUTION—NOTHING LESS! shirt, and do everything I could to disrupt it, taking inspiration from BAsics 6:3.

The Catholic fascists set up a podium in front of PP; I stood next to it, and the police blocked off the street at both intersections. There were around 40-50 of them, at least 2/3rds being teenagers/very young adults, with a core of middle-aged adults corralling them. Every time they would try to proceed with their sermon or prayers, I would just keep alternating between shutting down their arguments, disrupting their prayers, countering lies & distortions about abortions, etc. and calling upon the youths (particularly the young women) to break from the chains of religion and patriarchy. “Get up off your knees, stop praying to a god that doesn’t exist, quit wasting your one and only life and become an emancipator of humanity!” “You don’t have to be a slave to a man and be forced to give birth against your will!” “We need a revolution based on reality and science, not submission to Dark Ages mythology!” “You are a Christian Taliban, foot soldiers for the fascist Trump/Pence regime, and this represents a nightmare handmaid’s tale future for humanity!” Things of that nature, and a few chants similar to the slogans on my poster.

Many of the youths couldn’t help but divert their attention away towards me, a few even began crying. Although I was loud and disruptive for the entire hour—totally ruining any chance of a “successful” action on their part (at least in terms of being able to broadcast their message and, of secondary importance, their optics), I was also making sure to not be shrieking at people or to be vulgar for its own sake. Instead I was trying to stand on principled scientific and revolutionary determination, refusing to allow them to set the terms unopposed, and being loud/disruptive on that basis.

A few of the fascist adult handlers would try to engage me under the guise of “civil discourse,” but I knew they just wanted to stop me from disrupting it, so I ignored them. There was one person that came by and stood with me to protest, agitating in her own way, but she was proceeding from an anarcho-liberal “trolling” approach. She did not really wish to engage with me after the protest, and she was rather flippant and cynical about the whole thing in general.

After about an hour, they packed up to go on a procession, carrying crosses through the city and performing a bloody, sentimental reenactment of the Bible’s account of Jesus’ execution a la Passion of the Christ. Unfortunately, I could not continue to hound them, as I had to leave to go to work.

As they were gathering up to move on to their procession, the youths briefly dispersed a bit and I did manage to get some POAs to a few of the young women in the demonstration that had been led there. My thinking was that there was perhaps a slight possibility that things had been shaken up inside them by my presence and agitation, and there was perhaps an opening in their minds to begin questioning their thinking and beliefs. I don’t know on what basis they took the POAs, however, since none of them would speak to me. At this point their evangelist leaders were trying to sort of simultaneously “love bomb” me, fire off rapid-fire counterarguments, and offering to pray for me. In effect they were trying to quarantine me away from the youths, and as there was a rapidly dwindling audience at this point, I chose not to engage with their little mob surrounding me.

One PP escort came around the corner as I was leaving, saying that he was an atheist and that he agreed with me, but he expressed concern that it was a “bad look” to put forward such views so openly and said I should rethink the approach. I told him that I had put very careful consideration into choosing to confront these people with the truth, however harsh it may be. Before we could keep talking, one of the Catholic fascists noticed this interaction and started questioning him and asking if he was with me, and he started backpedaling and distancing himself very quickly. At one point during my disruption, I had paraphrased BAsics 4:20 and it got a good laugh from a few of the PP escorts behind me; perhaps he was one of them.

I can’t be sure that too much came out of this in an immediate sense, or what lasting impact my actions will have. There were a few short “thumbs up” and words of support from people passing by, and an acquaintance I knew from elsewhere stopped me for a second to say how bad-ass he thought I was, but when I encouraged him to participate he said he was on his way to an appointment and could not join me. I was trying to stay focused on making an impact, so I perhaps missed an opportunity to pass off a POA to him and the others who “wished me well,” but I only have two hands and things were kinda hectic (unfortunately, I don’t have his contact info either). However, I did make sure to report the experience to the people that are in the orbit around the core of the movement for revolution here (which they were quite glad & encouraged to hear about), hoping to inspire them to not only take bolder actions as individuals but to strengthen the collectivity as well. There are no photographs or footage of this that we could find online as of the time of this writing.

Side note: A number of the fascists trying to stop me, when I agitated with basic facts mainly derived from the “What Is an Abortion and Why Women Must Have the Right to Choose—Life Cannot and Should Not Always Be Preserved” article, would ask me if I had seen this new documentary on Netflix called Unplanned. I haven’t watched it yet but I’ve seen it in headlines, and I’ll be checking it out when I have time.

Let me know if you have further questions, feedback, criticisms, etc. regarding this report. I’ve attached an image that was circulated on the counterprotest Facebook page that exposed the plans for the Catholic fascist assault, as well as their official propaganda graphic from social media.

Together, WE passed $40,000 in revcom's Winter fundraising campaign to “Transform Revcom.us’ Web Technology and Presence”!

Reaching this goal is a real achievement and a victory for the people of the world, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the dedicated efforts of many people working creatively and collectively to meet this pressing need: those who donated whether large or small contributions, who fundraised, who spread the campaign, who sent statements, who raised comments, questions, criticisms or suggestions – and of course those who worked so hard on modernizing and upgrading our web technology and presence. It all made a difference!

The Ongoing Need for Sustainers

During this four month fund drive, Revcom.us continued to incur thousands of dollars of costs each month for our office, maintaining our existing site and other expenses. But thanks to our existing monthly sustainers we were able to meet these expenses and use all the funds raised in the drive to transform the website.

So we encourage all our donors and those who’ve not yet donated to become monthly sustainers at whatever level you can afford.

Remember, humanity’s fate truly hinges on millions taking up the revolutionary science, strategy, and new communism brought forward by Bob Avakian which they can find at revcom.us.

UCPD is surveilling and politically suppressing revolutionaries!

Which Side Are You On?

| revcom.us

Last week, the Revolution Club and the Get Organized for an ACTUAL Revolution Tour went around the UCLA campus doing a skit with a UC Police Department “pig” to draw attention to the case of the UCLA 5—five members of the Revolution Club, including students and alumni, facing criminal charges for participating in lawful (and absolutely righteous) political protests on campus—and to put a challenge to the students: Which side are you on? It has come out as part of this case that UCPD has been spying on the Revolution Club. This dangerous criminalization of protest and dissent is happening at a time of rising fascism, white supremacy, misogyny, and xenophobia, and EVERYONE with a conscience should demand that these illegitimate charges be dropped on the UCLA 5! At the same time, we are being targeted specifically because we are revolutionaries, and we wanted to let everyone know what this revolution is all about, and the radically different and better world we are fighting for, and draw forward the people who want to be part of that.

The pig skit definitely got people’s attention and turned their heads! We got out hundreds of flyers about the case. Along the way a number of people asked us about how they could learn more about this and some wanted to connect with the Revolution Club. This was just the beginning of what we want to do on campus around this case. More coming this week.

What People Are Saying about the Tour

| revcom.us

From a Reader from Iran:

An Internationalist Salute and Call to Donate to the National Revolution Tour

I want to send an internationalist salute to the National Tour to Get Organized for an Actual Revolution and call for everyone to support it, to get involved with this all out struggle for a better world.

The present social and economic system we live under has become totally unbearable for billions of people throughout the world. We are also at a stage of human development when every conscious human being needs to seriously ask if our survival could be sustained in this capitalist-imperialist world order.

The urgent question begging for an urgent answer is whether we can tolerate the cries of tens of millions of dying, exploited and disease-ridden children? Tolerate the rapid destruction of the environment? Tolerate past and continual genocidal wars (direct or proxy) of the imperialists—invasions, occupations, bombings and even the possibility of nuclear war? Tolerate the everlasting white supremacy, mass incarceration, police brutality and murder of Black and Latino youth? Tolerate militarization of the border, cries of tens of millions of refugees, children ripped from parents and put in cages? Tolerate the misogyny that crushes women’s bodies and dreams generation after generation? Tolerate the normalization of outright fascism with the Trump/Pence regime? Tolerate all this that non-stop victimizes millions of people every minute of every day? Or...

In his truly breathtaking talk Why We Need an Actual Revolution and How We Can Really Make Revolution, Bob Avakian (BA) keenly and seriously challenge those who are fed up with such monstrous capitalist-imperialist horrors to get organized and get rid of such a rotten and outdated system, to make revolution to replace it with a new and much better world—one dreamed and longed for by billions worldwide. There is no other way. I’ve watched this film many times and feel everyone should see it...

The young people in the Revolution Club are focused on a better world for humanity.  They aren’t just thinking about people in this country, but also those in the entire world.  They are working for revolution because they are very courageous, and it takes committed people to carry out this National Revolution Tour.  I believe in what they are doing—organizing people—it takes time and it takes support.  These young people are tireless and need our support!  I say this from the bottom of my heart: When I was a young activist, I used to “hear things” about the Revolutionary Communist Party such as: “if those people give you literature, don’t take it...”—but I have come to know them, and I admire and respect them.  I also have heard some activists say that the RCP is “too radical....” And what comes to mind is that “If the Germans and Jews would have been just as radical during the Nazi period, millions of lives could have been saved.”  Nobody is as courageous as the RCP.  Everyone should start working with them and, most importantly, also donate to the National Revolution Tour.  It’s a worthy cause—just think of the cost for flyers, posters, travel, food and more.  Those with thousands of dollars should donate thousands.  I am able to donate hundreds.  Please go to the revcom.us website and commit to donate $50 or $100 a month.  This tour stands for the people who have no voice.  They are out to help humanity.  I believe in what they are doing, working for revolution.  Bob Avakian has the plan... what is needed is for people to organize themselves and study this plan.

I am in! You should also join and support this worthy cause!

Funding ourselves

May 3: Last week, I had the pleasure of hosting the Get Organized for an ACTUAL Revolution Tour at my home for dinner. We had roasted chicken with coleslaw, mashed potatoes and gravy and hot rolls that I purchased from Von’s. Additionally, I purchased the ingredients for and prepared corn muffins and potato salad. Tour members helped me set out the dishes and finish up preparations. Other volunteers brought salad makings and an after-dinner pastry.

The tour members had organized several actions to spread the word about how grassroots activism to push for a revolution would be more effective than putting our efforts into bringing about social change through voting for social reforms. They were righteously tired and hungry, so the first order of business was to eat heartily. They were interested in my experiences in visiting Iran after the Iranian people had thrown out the Shah, a U.S.-supported ruthless dictator who commanded the fifth-largest army in the world in an almost bloodless revolution. So, I shared the exhilaration and joy that I had in being in a free country; I witnessed in Iran how a brave and resolute people had overthrown tyranny.* Then all of us shared the events of the day and enjoyed our political solidarity which cemented our friendship.

I encourage others to provide this kind of concrete support to the “Get Organized” tour as it goes around the country to stir people and challenge them to throw off their cynicism and join in the effort to mount demands for revolutionary change. Although I spent a few dollars and I devoted some time to shop for and prepare the food, the meal cost far less than if we had sat down at a restaurant or ordered take-out, and we were able to take as long as we wanted to eat our meal and socialize. Pooling our limited resources makes them go a long way. No time wasted applying for grants. No strings!

No one is going to fund us except ourselves, and why would we even want them to? Even the most benevolent funder wants you to submit proposals, file reports and evaluations. Also, that evening we created through our collective efforts a democratic, egalitarian event that celebrated our diversity in class, age and ethnicity and reinforced our revolutionary fervor. After the dishes were cleared, washed and put away, we ended the evening stronger. That strength came from ourselves, not from outside funding.

1. In 1978, millions and millions of Iranian people, from virtually all walks of life with a wide range of political viewpoints, rose up against the hated Shah and his regime, which was overthrown in February 1979. Millions had been awakened to political life, and their awakening and struggle continued in different ways after the revolution. However, by the early 1980s reactionary Islamic fundamentalists led by the Ayatollah Khomeini had brutally suppressed their opponents, which included Iranian communists, and were able to consolidate political power and establish the repressive theocracy that still rules Iran today. From Reverend Cecil L. “Chip” Murray:

April 17, 2019

Dear Friends,

I am referring you to open your minds and hearts to a message that has been begging for attention for 400 hundred years. I have personally listened to their presentation of the great concept they are embarking on, and suggest you do the same for their National Tour to Organize for an ACTUAL Revolution.

I am aware that there are many people in America who oppose communism on certain matters of great importance. I ask you to examine one matter which is birthed in communism, and that is what links us in the revolutionary need to emancipate humanity.

I am a Christian and not a communist nor am I an advocate of communism. However I commend all those who undertake the cause of justice and righteousness, such as opposing abuse of power by police and law enforcement, and opposing mass incarceration and massive homelessness. In Christian tradition, it is believed that “you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” Therefore you should engage their message and decide for yourself as to its merit for support.

As part of this, you may want to review and engage the film by Bob Avakian, the founder and designer of the new communism titled Why We Need An Actual Revolution And How We Can Really Make Revolution.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

Reverend Cecil L. “Chip” Murray

Thousands Raised...Many Thousands to Go...
Donors speak out about why they gave to The Get Organized for an ACTUAL Revolution Tour

| Revolution Newspaper | revcom.us

The Get Organized for an ACTUAL Revolution Tour has started in Los Angeles, as the start of a national Tour going across this country. There have been events in different cities to kick off the Tour that raised funds, and send-off parties for volunteers heading to Los Angeles, where funds were raised. The call to donate financial support for the Tour has already brought some significant donations that indicate the real, if beginning, potential for very broad support for this Tour. This includes people who have given matching donations—one for $2,000 if others would match it—and a number who agreed to sustain the Tour on a monthly basis. There are others who have agreed to donate food for the volunteers going on the Tour, and some who have made things to be sold to generate funds for the Tour.

The many thousands of dollars raised so far is just a very small portion of what is going to be needed to support this Tour, and sustain and grow the movement for revolution, organizing thousands now and impacting the whole society that this Tour is setting out to do.

Here is the basic truth. Bob Avakian (BA) emphasizes in Why We Need An Actual Revolution And How We Can Really Make Revolution, Networks of people, working together to spread the word about and organize people into the revolution, need to be built, and expanded, in all parts of the country—and linked together.” Very importantly, this includes building up financial support now for the Tour as part of that process. There can be no revolution without financial support. There will be no revolution without organization of people of all strata, networks of people who are an essential part of the strategy for an actual revolution.

Many thousands donating now—including many people who are just hearing about the need and possibility for an actual revolution for the first time—will make it possible for this Tour to shake things up at this crucial moment in history, when so much hangs in the balance for humanity.

The statements on this page from donors give a living sense of the different ways people are seeing the importance of contributing by donating to the Tour, and calling on others to join them in this historic effort.

Internationalist fundraiser for Revolution Tour:
Great Food—Great Company—Great Cause

Posted May 27, 2019

From readers:

It was an afternoon befitting the invitation for “an internationalist feast to support the National Tour to Get Organized for an Actual Revolution.” Guests were greeted by large posters from revcom.us of the “5 STOPS” and BAsics 3:2 as they walked into the garden patio filled with the sweet scent of jasmine flowers and delicious home cooked world cuisine. There were trays of tahdig (aka Persian soul food), pita pocket chicken sandwiches, Iranian rice, tamales, a big pot of Champurrado, freshly grilled BBQ chicken, and even a potato salad with the word “Internationalism” spelled out on top, and much more.

A real added internationalist treat was a rich mixture of melodic accents from various parts of the world in animated conversations, infusing a couple hours of intense and lively debate and discussion. People wrote out “internationalist messages to the National Tour” on a message board in Farsi, Amharic, Spanish and English, some of which read: “Saludos y abrazos a los valientes camaradas de la gira!”; “Nos urge una REVOLUCION pero YA!”; “Revolution needs communication & love needs sacrifice”; and “Wishing you much success.”

We made our goal of raising $1K from this event (a total of $1,102 with pledges and cash)... Read more

An Internationalist Benefit Dinner for the Revolution Tour

Posted May 20, 2019

From a reader:

Over $1,400 was raised at the “Celebrate Internationalism” benefit dinner for the Get Organized for an ACTUAL Revolution Tour. $1,200 came from the event on May 11 and the rest from donations and new sustainers. About 30 people came, including some new people recently met during the 12-day effort in spreading the Points of Attention (POAs). The food was delicious and international—Afghan, Iranian, Palestinian, and Mexican restaurant owners contributed food in addition to food brought by supporters of the movement for revolution. Three languages were spoken—Farsi, Spanish, and English... Read more

Stoop Sale Fundraising for the National Get Organized for an ACTUAL Revolution Tour

From a reader:

Last weekend, some of us organized a stoop sale in response to the National Get Organized for An ACTUAL Revolution Tour call for fundraising. (Stoops are the stairs outside a house.) We’re counting on this stoop sale to spur you and others like you to raise funds for the national tour.

We would like to make two challenges:

  1. Match our $1,000 by Sunday, May 26. Of the $1,349 we raised at the sale, we decided to put $1,000 toward a matching donation to challenge others to contribute and double the funds for the Tour. (The rest of the money will go towards promotion and other expenses.)
  2. Organize a garage sale or flea market. Set a goal and raise money to meet the Tour’s May goal of $20,000!

Step Up to My $1000 Challenge to Support the National Revolution Tour

[Editor’s note: This matching donation challenge was met by May 1]

I will double your donation to the National Get Organized for an ACTUAL Revolution Tour, up to $1,000, received by May 4. The National Get Organized for an Actual Revolution Tour goal: to spread the word and bring people into the process of building for an actual revolution.

I have searched my heart and soul, and either I choose to accept to live in a world based on heinous brutality and crimes against humanity in the US and around the world, or I stand up and fight for revolution. It is through studying the scientific work of Bob Avakian, that I am convinced that the only way out of this hell, is through a revolution that digs up this system's rotten roots and brings into being a whole new system that is not built on exploitation, but on the needs of the people and the highest aspirations of humanity...

From an immigrant store-owner:

We have been fooled and given false promises. For 2 years we were told to wait for the Mueller report. We need the power of the people and we need to be in the streets. Barr is Trump’s DOJ, Barr works for Trump and not for the people. It’s wrong that we waited and trusted the government. Both the Democrats and the Republicans have been joining to create illusions for the people, like the Mueller investigation.

They make people passive, to string people along to believe there is always a next step in the process of the system in order to get rid of Trump. There’s not going to be change through laws, and there’s not going to be change from the Democrats, and there is not going to be a change through normal channels. I feel this is the time people must wake up. These times are more dangerous. Trump is a fascist, backed by Miller, and white supremacists. Trump is out for revenge. This is just like Hitler. I feel we need a real revolution. I feel it is important to support this tour because it is spreading revolution and is organizing for revolution. I am making a monthly donation and encourage others to do so.

From the Revolution Club, NYC:

A Beautiful Celebration and Send-Off Fundraising Party for the Tour Volunteers

“I’m going because... we need a different world... and people don’t actually know... there is a Party, there is Leadership, and there is a plan and strategy to make this real and that’s what we’re bringing to people, the fact that there can be a different world. That it’s completely unnecessary how people are living right now and that it can be radically changed... a lot of good people are being fooled into thinking that these different ways of acting are what we need, whether it’s the electoral process or thinking about yourself and approaching the world from yourself out... so I’m really glad to be a part of this and be a part of those who are trailblazing and actually bringing this strategy to people who need it.”

—volunteer for the Tour at the March 7 Send-Off Fundraiser in New York City

On Thursday, March 7, a beautiful celebration and send-off fundraising party took place at Revolution Books in Harlem for some of the volunteers traveling to Los Angeles to take part in the first leg of the yearlong Get Organized for an ACTUAL Revolution Tour. The nationwide Tour kicks off in mid-March and will be traveling across the country to put revolution before millions and organize thousands into it. It was a fun evening hosted by the Revolution Club, who overall led in working and struggling with many others to make it happen. From choosing the songs on the playlist that bumped all night (which, among those picking the songs, involved important grappling with what it means to have a lively culture that is also uplifting and not degrading), to the different people who cooked and bought food or went to restaurants to get items donated, to the live performance and the jam session at the end, the evening truly came together in a powerful way. A dramatic reading of the Call for the Tour was done to the beat of a drum and the audience clapping their hands (this was a creative idea from a newer Revolution Club member).

The centerpiece of the evening was getting to hear from the volunteers who spoke with tremendous heart for humanity and with science and passion for changing the world. Each spoke to why they were volunteering, what this means and why it matters. One of the volunteers said, “I’m going because we need an actual revolution” and later referenced Bob Avakian’s point that the question “for whom and for what” are we doing what we’re doing is important, that all this has to be about the emancipation of humanity. The volunteer said she was throwing in on this “for the seven billion people on this planet who need this revolution. That’s why I’m doing this and that’s why we should all be doing this... for the millions who are slaving away in Bangladesh and the children in Yemen that are dying from malnourishment; this is ‘for whom’ we are doing this for...”

An urgent challenge for the evening was to raise $1,000 towards the $15,000 that is needed nationally by March 15. A Revolution Club member worked and persevered with some donors to the Tour who weren’t able to attend to write statements to express why they had donated and to challenge others to support. In doing this, it was important to continually go back to the Call for the Tour and how all this has everything to do with making revolution and emancipating humanity. These statements were read by Revolution Club members from the stage and this inspired others in the room to donate on the spot or to make a pledge. The audience was made up of people in the arts, students, people who’d recently met the movement for revolution, along with longtime supporters. There were a number of people from all around world as well.

Throughout the night there were updates on how much had been raised and how close it was to achieving the goal. During the mingling, some of the people who had already donated, or pledged to sustain, and understood the importance of the Tour, stepped up to make the case to others to donate. Through the evening a sense of responsibility among many came alive—to raise much-needed funds for the Tour and to get NYC ready for when the Tour comes to town. At the end of the night the goal of $1,000 was reached.

As the Call for the Tour puts it: “Without hype, absent fundamental change, without revolution, the future of humanity and the planet hangs in the balance.... Make a Profound Difference and DONATE to the possibility of something that could get beyond this horror and radically change the world.” The send-off fundraising party was a beginning step in making that real.

This is a statement from someone who donated $2,000 and called on people to match it—other donors matched his challenge.

Hey what’s up. This is Mark from The Resistance Company in front of Trump Towers on the beach. I just want to say I’m donating to the Revolution Club. They are going to be touring the U.S. in an effort to transform society. And we need now more than ever to have society transformed. We NEED a REVOLUTION! Fuck you, Donald Trump. New York hates you!

This Revolution Tour is significant—it has real significance. We’ve got talk of the release of the Mueller report, about freshman Congress members’ proposals, and all of the 2020 Democratic candidates. NO CHANGES. Now here comes the Get Organized for an ACTUAL Revolution Tour: THAT is a universal call, for HUMANITY, not for identity politics or a political machine. It’s a challenge to the comfort zone of normalization. The Call for the National Revolution Tour has real depth to it, and front and center is Bob Avakian and what he is saying. How to produce change? How else would you do it? The Tour is creating an environment for this change, not martyrdom, but real change.

How urgent is this tour? Trump wants to drop a bomb on Iran and threatens all the people on the Korean Peninsula with nuclear weapons. The Tour is going to the rural areas too! Look at the damage to people’s psyches in the rural areas, the opioid epidemic, even with protests against the companies fueling this epidemic... still, all this keeps going on and an astounding number of people have died. And nothing is being done. But the Call and Revolution Tour is pushing on, pushing forward. I am someone who can’t wait, and I support this Revolution Tour because I am a grandparent and I am concerned about the future, for my grandchildren and everybody’s grandchildren. I can give $50 this month, and we’ll keep talking about donations each month....

A supporter of the Tour from California

Hello Chicago Revolution Club,

I really like to put the small amount of money I have to good use, and, in my opinion, there is no better use for it in today’s troubled world than to support all of you at the Chicago Revolution Club.

The vanguard movement of the Revolutionary Communist Party’s new synthesis... is what gives me solid hope for the future. It is the ONLY answer to ending the centuries-old nightmares of the inhumanity of the existing system that I see as a scientific thinking person.

Knowing that I am doing my small part in supporting the fearless integrity and scientific foundation of the Revolution Club gives me a warm feeling inside because I KNOW you are at the very leading edge of what needs to be done to slice through the lies and misconceptions perpetuating the horrific crimes happening every minute of every day all around us and all around the world.

NO, it doesn’t have to be that way. And so, I am very happy to do my part for the cross-country Tour starting in LA to show thousands that a determined, scientifically based revolution IS the only way forward here in the spring of 2019. We are AWAKE to MAKE history, instead of allowing others to force nightmares upon us.

I am compelled to support the Tour because this is a crucial time in human history, a moment in which human rights are eroded at an alarming rate—and eroded, period! We are facing a crossroads at which fascism could seriously consolidate or people can be swayed by imperialists with an American chauvinist agenda who are appealing and appeasing with false promise of something different. The Revolution Club has enormous potential to break through both these forces and win people over to critical thinking and the viable, necessary strategy of Bob Avakian and the Party. And we must support and enable this with everything we’ve got. I’m calling on people to match my $200 donation. [This donation was matched.]

From a high school student who is an intern at Revolution Books:

I think it’s very moving because the people who are going on the Tour are doing this for humanity, not just for themselves. Especially at a time when people think nothing can be done to make a change. And even though it’s national, it should have reach beyond the U.S. so people around the world know about it. So people should be open-minded and listen and learn from the Tour. “That’s interesting, I never thought about it that way.” That’s how you make change, open yourself to understand more. And without the support of people, it wouldn’t even make sense to have the Tour. It’s necessary for people to support and help out in any way they can. A donation or give time, let’s work as a unit to make this work.

Intersectionality: Feel-good Make-believe in the "Woke" Spaces of Empire

by Nayi Duniya

Welcome to the land of intersectionality—where a seemingly radical and all-encompassing framework can comprehend and traverse multiple oppressions faced by billions on this planet without the “messiness” of overthrowing the system that generates and enforces these oppressions; where truth is determined and wrong is righted by anointing the most oppressed as authority and leadership in struggles for reform; where the most fundamental and deep-seated social divisions and lopsided gulfs of the world such as between rich and poor nations are effectively ignored and where identified “intersections” and “direct experience” shared across “lanes” are sufficient to change the world.

This is feel-good make-believe “woke” world. In the real world of horrendous—and needless—suffering, it is a cruel joke inflicted upon the billions of humanity. The world is a horror for the vast majority—oppression and exploitation of whole peoples, genocidal wars and violence in the intimate sphere, millions driven off homes by conflict and global warming. This world is shaped and stamped by a system: the system of capitalism-imperialism.

IDENTITY POLITICS AND PRIVILEGE

Have you ever noticed that the one privilege these “identity politics” hustlers don’t talk about is American privilege?—the privilege that comes from living in the USA, a country that plunders the world and whose wealth and power rests on brutal exploitation and oppression throughout the world, backed up by the massive violence of the American military. These hustlers want all they can get of that privilege. In opposition to that, what the masses of humanity need is to do away with and move beyond this whole vampire system, putting an end to all exploitation and oppression.

Response to FEM Magazine:
Trying to Censor Revolutionaries in Safe Spaces of Empire

By Tala Deloria, Revolution Club, LA

After The Word on Wednesdays (an open mic poetry venue at UCLA) censored a revolutionary’s poem, we challenged the people attending to a debate about where the framework of intersectionality leads. They did not come to debate, but a contributor to FEM magazine wrote an article about the incident. This is a response to help bring clarity to the contention.

What we have here is two opposing models in contention. One aiming to sweep away oppression and exploitation throughout the planet, and the other aiming to curate the positions of oppressed people within this system—dictating who owns what oppression, and what stories can be told by whom—all of which leaves the world as it is.

Prison Abolition: How to Feel “Woke” Without Fundamentally Changing a Thing

A REVOLUTIONARY Intervention from Tala Deloria
Revolution Club member and UCLA student

If you’re serious about ending mass incarceration and police terror, you need to be talking about the OVERTHROW of this system. Anything short of this, in the final analysis, is bullshit.

This system of capitalism-imperialism is what’s driving the genocidal police terror and mass incarceration of over 2 million people, over half Black, Latino and Native American men and women. This same system terrorizes the globe with wars for empire, economic sanctions, coups, bombing and torture. It drives people from their homelands in desperation for a life and livelihood and then warehouses them in detention centers and concentration camps at the border. This same system enforces vicious misogyny, oppressive gender relations and has now brought to power a fascist regime reigning through undisguised dictatorship and intensified repression, concentrating the naked vileness that makes up the heart of America. This system CANNOT be reformed!

Going After the Sacred Cows of Identity Politics on a College Campus—Opening the Debate on Reform or Revolution

You Think You’re Woke... But You’re Sleepwalking Through A Nightmare! Intersectionality, “democratic socialism,” and all the rest of that stuff will keep you locked within the system we have now. These approaches can only lead you to bickering, begging and bargaining for seats at the imperialist table. We need a revolution—NOT reform—a revolution to OVERTHROW everything rotten and emancipate all humanity.

We brought this message to an Ivy League campus and challenged people to debate. Before we got very far, campus security freaked out and kicked us off campus. So we came back, but this time with a satirical flyer from campus security that said, “A Message From Campus Security: Do Not Talk To The Communists On Campus.” We dressed up in a police jumpsuit and the ugliest pig mask you have ever seen and handed out the flyer. A picture of our flyer was tweeted out by a writer to 47+ thousand followers, we ended up in group texts and somebody told us that we’d been made into a meme.

Why I Went to Challenge Brittney Cooper—and What We Could All Learn From This

I recently went to an event on Black Feminism and Hip Hop to challenge Black feminist author Brittney Cooper. I brought an open letter written by a comrade of mine titled, “Hey Brittney Cooper—Do You Realize How Politically and Morally Bankrupt It Was For You To Invoke the War Criminal Nancy Pelosi When You Shut Down A Revolutionary?” When two of us in the audience separately posed this question to Cooper, she refused repeatedly to answer the question.

But the question matters. The problem of people taking up leadership based on “identity” rather than on the content of what is being brought forward and where those ideas will lead is extremely widespread and very damaging, far beyond Brittney Cooper as an individual. This kind of identity politics prevents people from thinking critically and sets them up to get played.

Booker T Washington–Style House Slave and the Line Behind Jay Z's Power Move
(Whose line is it anyway?)

Booker T. Washington is known for proposing—and fighting for, including through the establishment of HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities)—a certain way that a recently enslaved and systematically oppressed people could become active members of society and to rise above the muck of the being deemed by birth less than human. He stressed that Black social mobility had to be approached by not messing with the white man's power but by striving to be just like them.

Recently, Jay Z pimped off of Colin Kaepernick's selfless resistance and then threw Kap under the bus when he declared, "We are past kneeling" and was featured in pictures with Roger Goodell, lead commissioner of the NFL. It's a giant power move that required distancing himself from anything too radical for the league – i.e.: athletes using their platform to call out the way this system's police kill Black and Brown people daily, all while portraying them as animal-like “thugs.”

Excerpts from a Daily Cal op-ed:
Berkeley needs to stand up to fascist ideas
by Rafael Kadaris

Over the last two years, pro-Trump fascists have attacked Revolution Books in Berkeley and even threatened to burn it down. This past Sunday, Sept. 1, pro-Trump protesters once again attempted to march on our bookstore but were prevented from doing so by a defiant and joyous counter-protest.

The call for their “No to Marxism” protest said, “Revolution Books is a communist anti-American store.” Innocent as charged. Revolution Books is the intellectual, cultural and political center of a movement for an actual revolution. At the heart of our store is the new communism brought forward by Bob Avakian—a further development of Marxism and an even more scientific and liberating understanding of the world and how it can be radically changed.

We will not be intimidated by these anti-communist protesters. At the same time, these threats must be taken seriously. This fascism is not a sideshow or something that can be voted away, but it is deeply rooted in this system—it can and is “happening here.”...

On the cold-blooded police murder of Willie McCoy in Vallejo

This System Has No Future For Youth, But The Revolution DOES

This system has enslaved, brutalized, tortured, and betrayed Black people for 400 years! They have NEVER valued Black lives, except as labor to mercilessly exploit in building up the wealth of this country. And now, because this capitalist system has moved so much industrial work to places where they can pay people even less and make even more profit—and because Black people in racist America have always been last-hired and first-fired—this system has no jobs and no future for millions of people besides a jail cell or a police bullet. And they patrol whole neighborhoods like an occupying army, treating people like Willie McCoy as nothing but a “problem,” to be caged or killed off.

Blaming "the Benjamins" Whitewashes Reality: The U.S. Backs Israel Because It Is an Enforcer for the U.S. Empire

Basic point number 1: Donald Trump said there were “good people” among the murderous fascist mob chanting “Jews will not replace us” in Charlottesville, Virginia. His regime has legitimized Nazis and created a climate that produced the most lethal anti-Semitic massacre in U.S. history, the mass killing at a Pittsburgh synagogue last October. Any leading figure who can uphold, or tolerate, or “reach across the aisle” to a fascist regime like that has very obviously forfeited any right to speak on who and what is anti-Semitic. So those people should shut up.

But point number 2: No amount of Benjamins ($100 bills) buys or sells strategic allies for this bloody-jawed empire. All the conspiracy theories about how the Israel lobby represents—as Omar insisted in a follow-up tweet—“allegiance to a foreign country” channel the outrage people in this country and around the world feel at Israel’s genocidal crimes against the Palestinian people into looking at the world through the lens of what is in the national interest of the United States! And when you look at the world through that lens, you are on your way to complicity with the ongoing crimes of an empire built on genocide, slavery, and wars of empire.

The Green New Deal is not only an utterly ridiculous delusion, it’s a program for an American chauvinist “better business plan.” It promises a complete reconfiguration of the American economy without confronting the reality that things are produced through vast and interconnected global networks of exploitation, and it promises Americans better distribution of the spoils gained from that exploitation.

The problem isn’t that we need a better business plan for a Green American Empire. The problem is this system of capitalism-imperialism that’s driving the destruction of the planet.

Trump/Pence Regime: Revving Up the Juggernaut

| revcom.us

The accompanying interview with Andy Zee goes into the implications of the Mueller report on accusations concerning the Trump/Pence regime. Zee states in his interview that “there’s a need for those who do see the roots of this regime in the whole history of America, founded on white supremacy and genocide and patriarchy, and in the system that exploits and oppresses people here and around the world—all of this which has given rise to a Trump/Pence regime and this huge fascist base. Right now there’s a need to step up agitation for the need to overthrow this system, and for an actual revolution. For people to get organized into that revolution, which is why you and I are out here in Los Angeles. And at the same time, people can get deeper into that by getting into the work of Bob Avakian, particularly his film on the Trump/Pence regime and his film on Why We Need An Actual Revolution And How We Can Really Make Revolution, which are both available at revcom.us. [There’s also a need] for people to get into the program of Refuse Fascism... that is calling for people to get out into the streets in an organized... as soon as possible in sustained protests that continue week after week, day after day, night after night—whatever it takes until this regime is removed from office.

“The urgency of that call is driven home not only by some of what is revealed in the Mueller report, but even more in the way in which the regime has in the past few months radically stepped up its assault and intensified the serious danger it poses to humanity. This assault has coherence—it is grouped around what Bob Avakian has called the fascist triad of all-out America-first chauvinism, blatant white supremacy, and misogynist attacks to hammer women back ‘into their place.’”

What follows is a basic and far from complete list of what has gone on.

1. Continued Military Aggression, Dangerous Threats of War

2. The Violent Reassertion of Blatant White Supremacy

3. Across-the-Board Attacks on a Woman’s Right to Abortion and Other Forms of Birth Control

These are only some of what has been a coherent and relentless attack—one which is gaining steam.

5 Reasons “The Green New Deal” Is Misleading, Dangerous and Part of the Problem—

Delusion and Deception in Service of American Empire

| revcom.us

Editors’ Introduction: In early February, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced a congressional resolution titled “Recognizing the duty of the Federal government to create a Green New Deal.” The stated goal of the Green New Deal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (it also contains calls for curbing economic inequality and racial injustice). This resolution is non-binding, which means that even if Congress passes it, nothing in the proposal would become law. But it has become a rallying cry for sections of the environmental movement and for many progressive-minded people. The following analysis demonstrates that the Green New Deal is not a solution to the problem of climate change but is part of the problem.

The planet is warming at an alarming rate, with horrific consequences for humanity and putting ecosystems and species in peril. International summits, agreements, and commitments from Kyoto to Paris have done little to nothing.

The most important fact is this: The problem of global warming cannot be resolved within the confines of this global capitalist-imperialist system.1

There are only two choices: let the planet hurtle uncontrollably towards environmental disaster, and let other horrors continue and intensify such as wars of aggression and the oppression of Black and Brown people, of women, and of immigrants; OR we make a revolution, an actual revolution to overthrow this system of capitalism-imperialism.

Along comes the Green New Deal. Does it offer a more practical and immediate way to solve this crisis? No! It leaves in place the system of capitalism-imperialism, the very cause of global warming, with its production for profit, its oil/energy corporations, and the U.S. military machine. It operates on the basis of a fundamental and dangerous fallacy—that the current U.S. economy and standard of living simply needs to be weaned on to sustainable energy—when in fact a radical rupture is required in how what is today the United States interacts with the rest of the world and with the natural world.

This is not possible without an ACTUAL revolution, without dismantling and defeating the oppressive forces of the old order, and replacing it with a radically different system and society that are in line with the interests of humanity. But before we get to that, let’s actually examine the Green New Deal itself.

THE GREEN NEW DEAL—PART OF THE PROBLEM, HARMFUL AND MISLEADING

1. The Green New Deal Takes as a Given and Reinforces Imperialist Privilege

The Green New Deal sets out to “meet 100% of the power demand in the United States through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources... building or upgrading to energy-efficient, distributed, and ‘smart’ power grids and working to ensure affordable access to electricity.”2

Read those words again: “meet 100% of the power demand in the United States....” In other words, the Green New Deal takes America’s current level of production and consumption as a given. It takes the enormous disparities in energy consumption between the U.S. and most of the world as a given. It takes as a given (without admitting) that the standard of living of the richest economy in the world rests on the exploitation of hundreds of millions across the planet... and the plunder of the resources of the planet.

Walmart and most other major U.S. corporations outsource production (and pollution!) to China, Bangladesh, countries in Central America, and elsewhere. America’s total carbon pollution worldwide is actually 14 percent higher than the domestic numbers reveal... when you factor in the greenhouse gases emitted in the manufacture of cars, clothing, and other products overseas but consumed in the U.S.3

Can you solve the problem of global warming while keeping all these supply chains, with their sweatshops, pollution-intensive industrial agriculture, and shipping, intact? No you cannot.

Can you avert the collapse of ecosystems and get to zero-carbon emissions without making profound and, yes, wrenching changes in how we live, in what is produced and how, in what and how much we consume, in transport, in our values? You cannot.

But the Green New Deal spins the toxic fable that in the imperialist enclaves we can have it all: high growth, imperialist prosperity, and sustainability based on government-supported green technology fixes. This is not a solution but a reinforcement of the system that causes global warming.

2. The Green New Deal Does Not Keep the Fossil Fuel in the Ground

There is no mandate in the Green New Deal to keep fossil fuel in the ground. Instead, the Green New Deal proposes “to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.” This means that companies can pollute the atmosphere with carbon but “zero out” those emissions by, let’s say, creating carbon-absorbing tree plantations in the Third World. This “net-zero” escape clause also opens the prospects for questionable technology to capture and store carbon. The major oil companies are salivating over these technology investments because that enables them to keep pumping oil while appearing to be “going green.”

The Green New Deal places no limits on the activities of energy corporations or the banks that finance fossil-fuels. And let’s not dance around reality. To truly reverse climate change, the oil industry would have to be put out of business.

3. The Green New Deal Gives the U.S. Military a Pass

The genocidal U.S. military machine—with its tanks, naval ships, warplanes that rain death and destruction, and its 800 military bases that girdle the globe—relies on fossil fuel. In fact, the U.S. military is the single largest institutional consumer of oil in the world.4 Can you solve the problem of global warming while keeping that military machine in place? The Green New Deal doesn’t say a word!

But it does declare, echoing Pentagon-think, that “climate change constitutes a direct threat to the national security of the United States.”5 That is code for the criminal enforcement of the interests of the U.S Empire. In fact, Ocasio-Cortez in a recent video evoked the U.S. military during World War 2 as part of the glorious past of this country, when in fact this was a ruthless imperialist war culminating in nuclear holocaust committed by the U.S. against Japan.
The Green New Deal takes the New Deal of the 1930s and war mobilization of the 1940s as its model—and people need to wake up to how FDR’s New Deal served the American empire.

4. The Green New Deal Aims to Secure U.S. Dominance Under the Cloak of Green Energy

The Green New Deal draft document says that “adopting [its] goals would make ‘green’ technology, industry, expertise, products, and services a major U.S. export. As a result, America could become an international leader in helping other countries transition to completely carbon-neutral economies.” To some, this may sound positive and encouraging: America “will take the lead” in new, clean technologies and “help other countries.” But don’t get played: this is a green-chauvinist version of “Make America Great Again”...and it’s dangerous.

U.S. imperialism has historically used technological advantage to out-compete dependent countries and to penetrate and dominate them. The so-called “green revolution”6 involving hybrid seeds, pesticides, and infrastructure investment was packaged to raise agricultural productivity in order to “help” poor countries. But these and other “cutting-edge” technologies serve profit. Imperialism exports and deploys them in ways that create and increase dependency on imperialism—whether as loans to be paid back, parts replacement, intellectual property rights, and so on. For example, the global seed market is increasingly monopolized by major U.S. agro-business leading to harmful effects on biodiversity and financial dependency and ruin on the farmers who harness crops off them.

As for “climate-friendly” technologies, like solar and wind, the imperial mission set out in the Green New Deal to “help other countries” is a recipe for a kind of “climate colonialism.” Western Europe is aiming to meet its renewable energy targets in part by investing heavily in solar and wind generation in North Africa—that is, by grabbing land and renewable resources.7 Energy-guzzling California is importing wind power from Mexico. The Green New Deal incentivizes this to a whole new level. Something else: some of the raw materials required in the manufacture of this green-energy technology will be extracted from the Third World—by plundering land and super-exploiting workers.

5. A Sustainable Economy Without Comprehensive and Integrated Planning Is a Delusion

To truly confront and act on the environmental emergency, we need a whole different kind of economy—a genuinely socialist economy in which the means of production become the common property of society through public-state ownership, an economy in which resources are allocated according to a conscious plan to meet social need and protect and repair the environment.

The Green New Deal is the opposite of this. It relies on the imperialist market, on tax breaks and government incentives for the large corporations to invest in green technology, and making green profitable—all within and reinforcing the very system of capitalism-imperialism. Capitalism-imperialism is driven by competition to relentlessly expand production for profit and more profit, a system in which the major imperialist powers contend for control of regions, markets, and vital resources of the planet, and in which the natural world is treated as just so many “free” inputs to be seized and poured into production for profit.

The Green New Deal is not about the radical transformation of a profit-based capitalist economy. It’s not about shattering a global network of exploitation. It’s not about consciously regulating growth for the betterment of world humanity. The Green New Deal is an agenda to harness a less fossil-fuel based infrastructure to the existing imperialist economy—and to keep the U.S. at the top of the imperialist world system.

The Green New Deal is one part bullshit fantasy (an easy transition to sustainability) and one part a better business plan for a green American empire.

The Green New Deal is not a “something is better than nothing” proposition. Why is it harmful? It aims to mobilize resources and know-how to secure U.S. imperial hegemony with a green face. It corrals and channels people’s outrage and concern, initiatives and energy, back into reinforcing the system that is the cause of the problem in the first place—an ACTUAL obstacle to what IS needed, which is to break out of the confines and framework of this system as part of getting rid of it. The Green New Deal does NOT get us or move us from “here” (the environmental emergency) to “there” (an economy and society that interact with nature in a sustainable way). It is a deceptive and harmful dead end.

THE ONE REAL SOLUTION

We return to the two choices: let the planet hurtle uncontrollably towards environmental disaster; or make an ACTUAL revolution to overthrow this system and transform the entire economic, social, and political framework of society, to bring about a genuine socialist society.

The Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America, authored by Bob Avakian, sets forth how a genuine socialist society would be constituted and function; how it would be meeting the basic needs of people in a way that did not plunder either the nations of the Third World or the environment; its role in the world process of getting to a world free of exploitation, oppression, and antagonistic social divides; and how such a society would be able to address and tackle the environmental crisis.

On the basis of OVERTHROWING the old order and establishing a new revolutionary state power, it becomes possible to put an end to private production for profit, to socialize the means of production, and create a planned socialist economy that can allocate resources and consciously regulate economic growth for the betterment of world humanity and protection of the planet. One of the first acts of the new socialist state would be to totally dismantle the global network of U.S. military bases.

On this foundation, it becomes possible to decisively restructure the economy away from fossil fuels, to reconfigure the entire economy, and create a new kind of sustainable economy and society. And, most importantly, it becomes possible to unleash the creativity and determination of people—from basic people to the scientists whose findings about climate change go nowhere under this system—to tackle the environmental emergency.

The new socialist society would share knowledge and expertise and promote unprecedented international cooperation to save the planet. It would put an end to America’s global, cheap labor/pollution-intensive supply chains of exploitation. This would not be the same “consumer society” with its outsized and unsustainable global ecological footprint—and it would imbue people with the understanding, ethos, and morality that we must think and act as caretakers of the planet, and proceed from the fundamental interests of all seven billion of humanity.

We challenge the many, many people who DO see the gravity of the situation to grapple with the only framework through which humanity can forge a viable answer to the existential crisis, and on a truly emancipatory basis. There is no guarantee that we will succeed in reversing the environmental damage done and its continuing effects—but this is our only shot to deal with the environmental emergency on the scale and with the urgency needed.

Bringing this society into being will take an actual revolution. Starting with this Constitution for a radically different society, we have great strengths that include the science, the leadership and strategy for an actual revolution, with the basis for organizing thousands into the movement for revolution right now (go here for Bob Avakian’s speech Why We Need An Actual Revolution And How We Can Really Make Revolution). While this is critical, this movement does not yet have the people who are needed to make this a reality. We are setting out to radically change this (go here to learn about the National Revolution Tour). What is needed is you!

1. Bob Avakian makes the case for this in this excerpt from Part I of Why We Need an Actual Revolution And How We Can Really Make Revolution, where he states “the very nature of the capitalist-imperialist system dictates that competing capitalists, controlling billions of dollars of investments, and the governments of the major world powers in particular, are compelled to contend with each other for markets, cheap labor, and raw materials, including fossil fuels, and for control of strategic parts of the world.” [emphases ours]  [back]

It was aimed at increasing food production as part of a larger strategy of deepening U.S. imperialist economic penetration of these countries and preventing peasant revolution. It was highly carbon-intensive; it led to widening inequality in the countryside; and resulted in greater dependency on the West.  [back]

Some Key Principles of Socialist Sustainable Development

These key principles, though not exhaustive, concentrate an orientation that enables socialist society to begin to tackle the environmental emergency with a global and internationalist perspective. In putting these principles before people today, we hope to open up debate and discussion that can contribute towards raising understanding of what we are confronting—and raise sights about the viability and desirability of communist revolution.

Watch What You Wish For… FDR’s New Deal and the American Empire

| revcom.us

The proponents of the Green New Deal take the New Deal of the 1930s and 1940s as their inspiration and model for government social programs and government-led economic mobilization. Here are some basic facts that explode the official narrative surrounding the original New Deal.

1) The New Deal was not motivated by some special commitment to worker security and well-being. The economic and social measures of the New Deal were launched by the dominant section of the U.S. ruling class to prevent the collapse of capitalism. The U.S. and world economy in the 1930s were in the grips of the worst crisis in the history of capitalism. The New Deal was designed to rescue and rationalize the banking system, to stimulate industrial production and job creation, and to establish new regulations and forms of government intervention in order to stabilize capitalism and restore profitability.

2) The New Deal was aimed at preventing mass social upheaval, including the possibility of revolution. The Roosevelt years were about repressing and co-opting resistance and restoring people’s dwindling faith in the system. That’s why unions were recognized and institutionalized, that’s why social programs were enacted, and that’s why FDR spouted the rhetoric of “easing the plight” of the dispossessed.

3) The New Deal was not about social justice. Segregation and white privilege were built into the foundations of the welfare state that it established. Social spending and social programs were racially differentiated—with white workers receiving more of the unemployment benefits and Black workers put into welfare lines. Federal housing policy and programs were thoroughly discriminatory. Check out these two books: When Affirmative Action Was White, by Ira Katznelson and The Color of Law, by Richard Rothstein.

4) The New Deal morphed into imperialist mobilization for war; and it was not government social spending that got the U.S. out of the Great Depression but World War 2 and its particular outcome. World War 2 was not some noble enterprise of America “fighting for democracy” for the people of the world. It was America waging a murderous war for greater empire, vying with other imperialist powers for control of the world, a war in which America dropped two atomic bombs on Japan.

And as a result of World War 2, the U.S. became the dominant world imperialist power. The U.S.’s wartime rivals, German and Japanese imperialism, were defeated. The U.S. let the then-socialist Soviet Union bear the brunt of vanquishing Hitler and German imperialism. The U.S.’s victorious wartime allies, British and French imperialism, were greatly weakened. The U.S. emerged from World War 2 with its productive base intact.

In these circumstances, the U.S. forged the most extensive and integrated global empire in world history. The U.S. imperialists imposed the dollar as the global currency. The World Bank and International Monetary Fund, created as World War 2 was ending, enabled the U.S. to control the economic lifeblood and shape the development of economies of the Third World. The U.S. moved to dominate the Middle East and gain access to and control over its oil supplies. The U.S. was able to secure cheap raw materials and obtain high profits from low-cost manufacturing and agribusiness in the Third World. After World War 2, the U.S. became the policeman of the imperialist-dominated world—and America’s genocidal wars in Korea and Vietnam were not far off.

That’s what the New Deal was a prelude to and helped make possible. That’s what Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and the proponents of the Green New Deal would have you celebrate.

Letter from a Prisoner

How can any human being be decreed to be “illegal” on stolen land?!

| revcom.us

PRLF [Prisoners Revolutionary Literature Fund],

Now I can just hear these reactionary fools saying, ‘Well, Bob, answer me this. If this country is so terrible, why do people come here from all over the world? Why are so many people trying to get in, not get out?’...Why? I’ll tell you why. Because you have fucked up the rest of the world even worse than what you have done in this country. You have made it impossible for many people to live in their own countries as part of gaining your riches and power. (BAsics 1:14)

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and the director of ICE being forced out of the fascist regime is being described by the media as just another one of Trump’s “Shake-Ups” rather then calling it out for what it is... a further hammering into place a vicious American fascism with a program of white supremacy, misogyny, and xenophobia at the helm. In short, Nielsen and company weren’t Nazi enough, even as we all witnessed in horrified outrage the rounding up of thousands of immigrants, the snatching of children from parents, the tear-gassing of asylum seekers, Walmarts being transformed into concentration camps overnight, and U.S. troops being given the order to shoot any “rock throwers.” On top of all this, Trump now has declared to the world that he plans on going in a “tougher direction” in dealing with immigration and refugees so that they don’t treat their flight from American made hellhole conditions as a “picnic” or a “trip to Disney World.”

Based on the whole historical development of the United States from genocide to slavery and the basic nature and functioning of the capitalist-imperialist system, it should be clear that a “Viva! Beto” rally and the Democrats as a ruling class party as a whole, have no solution to the situation involving masses of immigrants, refugees, and the rise of fascism as embodied in the Trump/Pence regime. In fact, when asked by reporters about the barbaric measures of separating children, Trump responded, without skipping a beat, that we had Obama to thank for that idea—the same Obama that infamously became known as “The Deporter-in-Chief” and who insisted that “We, Democrats and Republicans, are on the same team.” (See Bob Avakian’s THE TRUMP/PENCE REGIME MUST GO!)

How can any human being be decreed to be “illegal” on stolen land?! As The Get Organized for an ACTUAL Revolution Tour call powerfully states:

The Republican Party Is Fascist
The Democratic Party Is Also a Machine of Massive War Crimes and Crimes Against Humanity
This System CANNOT Be Reformed—It MUST Be Overthrown!
We Need an Actual Revolution

Revolution—Nothing Less!

Case #22: The Barbaric Suppression of the 1811 Louisiana Slave Uprising

| revcom.us

Bob Avakian has written that one of three things that has “to happen in order for there to be real and lasting change for the better: People have to fully confront the actual history of this country and its role in the world up to today, and the terrible consequences of this.” (See “3 Things that have to happen in order for there to be real and lasting change for the better.”)

In that light, and in that spirit, “American Crime” is a regular feature of revcom.us. Each installment focuses on one of the 100 worst crimes committed by the U.S. rulers—out of countless bloody crimes they have carried out against people around the world, from the founding of the U.S. to the present day.

American Crime

THE CRIME

They moved downriver, nearly 25 strong, the heavy night rain silencing their approach. Forty miles from New Orleans, they break into the mansion, run to the second floor where they find and wound with an axe the slave owner Manuel Andry and kill his son. They then break into the mansion’s basement, collect muskets and ammunition, take several horses, and continue to march downriver.

So began, on January 8, 1811, the largest slave revolt in U.S. history, an armed revolt against the slavery system’s barbaric, intolerable conditions. And a revolt the slave owners and U.S. authorities violently suppressed using the most savage means imaginable. The rebels’ political goal was to establish an independent Black republic on the shores of the Mississippi, with a captured New Orleans as its capital.

Manuel Andry was among the French planters who established highly profitable sugarcane plantations in the rich agricultural region known as the Mississippi River’s German Coast. Many of these planters had been forced to flee to the Orleans territory from the Caribbean French colony of Saint-Domingue, where the slaves had risen up, arms in hand, and defeated the planters and armies of the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The victorious rebels renamed Saint-Domingue the free republic of Haiti, abolished slavery, declared racism illegal, and permanently banned the French from the island.

The French planters able to escape and settle in the Orleans territory brought with them many of their slaves. Intent on creating a new Saint-Domingue by maximizing the quantity and quality of sugarcane output, they achieved greater profits than slaveholders elsewhere, their wealth concentrated in huge landholdings, grandiose mansions, and a lavish lifestyle. But to achieve this wealth, they resorted to the same vicious practices they used in Saint-Domingue, turning their slaves into sugar-producing machines on plantations resembling death camps.

At harvest time, the slaves worked 16 hours a day, seven days a week, cutting down the eight-foot-high sugarcane. Laboring in the swamps’ summer heat, they were attacked by mosquito swarms, with many developing malaria and other tropical diseases. If slaves failed to meet their daily quota, or rebelled against their wretched conditions, punishment awaited. For minor insubordination, chained imprisonment for a period of time was likely. For greater disobedience, there was the whip—three stakes driven into the ground in triangular fashion, six feet apart; each hand of the slave tied to a stake, feet tied to the third; then came the lashing with a rawhide whip, creating with each stroke deep cuts seven or eight inches long.

For worse offenders, for those who attempted to escape, for example, there were torture devices they were forced to wear, such as a neck collar with inward-pointing spikes that made it impossible for the slave to lie down and rest his or her head. Finally, beyond the whip or spiked collar was the ultimate form of punishment: death by hanging or other means.

These were the intolerable conditions that led to the uprising of 1811. After having seized guns, ammo, and horses at the Andry plantation, the slaves continued to march downriver, chanting “Freedom or Death!” and “On to New Orleans!” At the plantation of Jacques and Georges Deslondes, the home plantation of Haitian-born Charles Deslondes, an overseer-turned-revolutionary and the insurrection’s major leader, eight slaves joined the revolt.

Small groups of slaves joined from every plantation the rebels passed. Two key organizers of the revolt, African-born Kook and Quamana, led more than half the slaves at their plantation to join, bringing the total number to well over 100. Most estimates are that 200 to 300 slaves joined, although some eyewitnesses and others have said it was as many as 500.

As the march grew in size and strength, terrified plantation owners and their families fled, some hiding in nearby swamps, others seeking refuge in New Orleans. There, on January 9, Governor William Claiborne and U.S. military commanders mustered two companies of volunteer militia, 30 regular troops, and 40 seamen to attack the rebels. At the same time, the wounded Manuel Andry, who had managed to reach New Orleans, worked with other planters who had fled there to form a militia led by mounted cavalry.

By early morning on January 10, these forces had reached a plantation where they thought the rebels had encamped overnight. But the rebels had already started back upriver, nearing another plantation. There, planter Charles Perret had assembled a well-armed militia of about 80 men, who he ordered to attack the insurgents. Despite their greater numbers and some guns, the slaves were not as well armed as their attackers. Only about half had bullets for their muskets, and others carried only sabers, axes, and cane knives. Within 30 minutes, 40 to 45 slaves had been killed, many others had been wounded, another 50 had been captured, and others escaped into the swamp. The militiamen then barbarically chopped off the heads of those they had killed and began pursuit of the others, led by a pack of bloodhounds. They soon found Charles Deslondes, the dogs getting to him first. The militiamen, intent on making a public display of Deslondes, dragged him back to the cane fields where they chopped off his hands, broke his thighs, shot him, then put him on a bundle of straw and roasted him to death.

Kook and Quamana were among those captured and taken to a plantation to be tried. There were three “legal” trials in all, kangaroo courts in reality, quickly ending in executions of most of those captured either by hanging or firing squad, including Kook and Quamana. But whether it was those killed in the initial battle, by subsequent capture and summary executions, as befell Charles Deslondes, or by executions after the trials, the planters and the New Orleans authorities performed the same savage ritual of chopping off the heads of the corpses and putting them on pikes, their mutilated bodies also publicly displayed. By the end of January, nearly 100 heads on pikes were displayed in central New Orleans and for 40 miles along the River Road, into the heart of the plantation district. Wrote one exultant planter, “They were brung here for the sake of their Heads, which decorate our Levee all the way up the coast. They look like crows sitting on long poles.”

THE CRIMINALS

The sugarcane plantation owners: Known to be among the cruelest, most brutal slaveholders anywhere in the South. When slaves farther north spoke fearfully of being “sold down the river,” they were referring mainly to the sugarcane plantations around New Orleans, where they worked longer hours, endured the harshest punishments, and lived shorter lives than most slaves elsewhere in the South. Manuel Andry and Charles Perret stand out for the role they played in brutally suppressing the rebellion.

William C.C. Claiborne: Appointed governor of the Orleans territory by President Thomas Jefferson, and with the population of New Orleans consisting mainly of urban slaves and free Black people, Claiborne feared the opening of a second front, which he believed would doom the city’s white population. He put New Orleans on lockdown and ordered that no Black person was allowed to be in the streets after 6 pm. Claiborne then spearheaded the creation of the voluntary militia and federal government armed force, led by General Wade Hampton and Commodore John Shaw, that hunted down and eventually suppressed, through the bloodiest possible means, the rebel insurrection.

President Thomas Jefferson had appointed Claiborne governor of the territory shortly after the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, when the U.S. bought from Napoleon Bonaparte, for the bargain price of $15 million, what now equals nearly a quarter of today’s United States. The purchase was made by Jefferson primarily in the interests of the slave owners, with the aim of spreading their murderous slave system into new areas of North America.

The legislature of the Orleans territory, which, following the revolt’s suppression, approved “compensation” of $300 to planters for each slave initially killed or ultimately executed.

THE ALIBI

Claiborne and others worked to publicly characterize the revolt as nothing more than the actions of “brigands”—criminals, a band of thieves and marauders. The purpose of the trials themselves was to treat the rebellion as a simple legal matter dealing with a criminal act. This reduction of the rebellion to criminality resonated in the halls of D.C., where no concern was expressed for the real crimes: the slave system itself and the revolt’s brutal suppression.

THE ACTUAL MOTIVE

While the planters and federal authorities worked to reduce the slave rebels in the public eye to nothing more than savage criminals bent on creating mindless havoc, they were fully aware that the revolt was politically motivated, carefully planned, and represented a serious challenge to the system of plantation slavery and its westward expansion. In fact, seeds of the rebellion had been planted long before its outbreak. Kook and Quamana, for example, began planning a rebellion not long after they were brought to New Orleans. They carefully identified like-minded slaves, including during market trips to New Orleans. Similarly, as a trusted overseer, Charles Deslondes traveled openly to plantations, where he cultivated small insurrectionary cells. These cells took as their inspiration the victorious Haitian revolution, were driven by powerful revolutionary ideas, and were prepared to attack in organized fashion and under solemn oath of “freedom or death!” when their leaders gave them the word.

It is precisely because of the highly developed nature of the revolt and its political aim of establishing an independent Black republic that the slave owners and U.S. authorities set out to mercilessly crush the rebellion, to savagely place on pikes the heads of 100 rebels and display their mutilated bodies—providing a glimpse, just a brief but crystal clear glimpse, into the utter barbarity of the slave system.

From: ON "PRINCIPLED COMPROMISES," AND OTHER CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY

* Writing in the New York Times “Book Review” section (Sunday, October 25, 2015), speaking about the convention in 1787 that “led to the creation of the United States Constitution,” Robert E. Rubin, former Secretary of the Treasury under Bill Clinton, actually says the following:

“Disagreements about the extent of federal power and the design of our democratic institutions were resolved through long arguments and, ultimately, principled compromises.” (Emphasis added)

Principled compromises?! The founding of this country on the basis of institutionalizing slaveryofficially establishing the “right” to own slaves, and the status of slaves as less than human, in its founding Constitution—that is a “principled compromise” in the eyes of a present-day representative and functionary of the ruling class of this country. And the fact is that no major politician and no other significant representative of this ruling class will, or can, denounce this country, since its very founding, and denounce its “founders,” in the terms in which they deserve to be denounced: monstrously criminal. If founding a country on the basis of institutionalizing slavery is not a monstrous crime, what is? The fact that no significant representative and functionary of this system, in this country, can recognize and acknowledge this as a monstrous crime—and instead they all uphold as “great men” those, like Thomas Jefferson, who founded a country on the basis of this monstrous crime, and who perpetuated this crime for generations—that gets to the very core of what this system is all about and why there is a great need to put an end to this system at the earliest possible time, and replace it with a system that has no need, no place, and no apology for slavery in any form.

The Two Killings of Sam Cooke
Check It Out on Netflix

From a reader

| revcom.us

As a teenager in the late 1950s and early '60s, I listened to and loved the music of Sam Cooke. Some of my favorites are “A Change Is Gonna Come,” “Chain Gang,” and “You Send Me.” But I learned a lot more about Sam Cooke and his stand against white supremacy in the new Netflix documentary, The Two Killings of Sam Cooke.

The documentary chronicles Sam Cooke’s defiant stand against white supremacy through his voice and the voices of other musicians of that time—Smokey Robinson, Dionne Warwick, and Quincy Jones. It shows how the government had him in their sights.

Sam Cooke’s killing in 1964 by a motel manager in Los Angeles was called “justified homicide” by the LAPD, but the documentary indicates that there may have been more to it than what the LAPD called it. The people who knew Sam Cooke talk about how the actual circumstances surrounding his killing point to other possibilities why he was killed.

Sam Cooke was at the forefront of the civil rights movement in the late 1950s and early 1960s.The documentary goes back and forth between Cooke’s life and the brutal oppression that Black people were facing in the South and how all that influenced him, including the murder of Emmett Till. The film suggests that even after Cooke was murdered, his influence was still being felt when the 1965 Watts Rebellion occurred.

Cooke went on to start SAR, the first independent record label launched by a major Black artist, that challenged the larger labels in the industry in the early 1960s.

The director of the film, Kelly Duane de la Vega, said Sam Cooke “was an incredible musical artist, but just as important was the way he contributed to the civil-rights movement and embodied the idea of an African-American artist having power in the record industry.”

People who know of Sam Cooke and those who don’t know about him should watch this documentary. Sam Cooke was a very special person. He had one of the most beautiful voices. He wrote and performed songs that pointed to the brutal conditions faced by Black people. He was at the forefront of the struggle to end segregation in the South and in the music industry. His life was stopped short, way too soon, just as the lives of other Black civil rights activists were snuffed out during that period.

For those who don’t know, Fruitvale Station is a very powerful, moving, and excruciating film that depicts the last day in the life of Oscar Grant.  Oscar was a 22-year-old, unarmed Black man murdered by Bay Area Rapid Transit police on New Year’s Day, 2009.  He was returning home from celebrating on New Year’s Eve, when police stopped Oscar and the friends he was with, harassed and brutalized them, straddled Oscar as he lay face down on a subway platform, and fatally shot him in the back.

Not too long ago, I watched Fruitvale Station with Bob Avakian (BA), chairman of the Revolutionary Communist Party.  Towards the very end of the film, agonizing, heartbreaking and infuriating scenes are shown: The cop shooting Oscar in the back; Oscar’s girlfriend frantically rushing to the scene, trying to find out what happened; Oscar’s loved ones gathering together and waiting desperately to find out if he would make it, only to find out he was gone forever.

As these scenes unfolded, I looked over at BA.  He was sobbing.  Not just misty-eyed. Sobbing.  And he continued to cry tears of heartbreak and rage for several minutes, as the closing credits rolled.

This made a very big impression on me.  BA did not know Oscar Grant personally. But he felt the sting of his murder in an extremely raw and visceral way. And I think his reaction speaks volumes about who Bob Avakian is, what he represents, and what he is all about.

BA has literally been fighting against this system for 50 years.  He has been a revolutionary communist for about 45 years.  He has been shouldering the responsibility of leading the Revolutionary Communist Party for almost 40 years. And over the course of the last several decades, he has forged the theory and deepened the science for the revolution humanity needs to get free, while also providing practical leadership to the party and movement working for that revolution.  And all of this has involved not only tremendous work, but also tremendous risk and sacrifice on BA’s part as anyone with a sense of U.S. history, and/or BA’s personal history—specifically, what this reveals about the way the U.S. government viciously goes after revolutionary leaders—should well understand. And over all these decades, and through everything described above, BA has never lost an ounce of his love and feeling for the masses of people, his sense of outrage and hatred for all the ways in which the masses suffer needlessly, and his fire for revolution to emancipate the masses all over the world.  Not one bone in his body has become numb.

There is a great deal more that could be said about the experience of watching Fruitvale Station with BA. But I want to highlight two points.

First, I think that in BA’s reaction to this movie, there is a lot for revolutionary communists, and anyone with concern for humanity and hatred for oppression and injustice, to reflect on and learn from.  Even with all the work BA has done and continues to do in the realm of theory, in order to forge a deeper understanding of why police murders like the execution of Oscar Grant and countless other outrages keep happening, the larger picture they are connected to, and how these outrages can be ended through revolution; even though BA has been at this for decades; and even with all of the horrors that pile up every single second that this system remains in place, there is absolutely no sense on BA’s part of world-weary detachment or defeatism when something like the murder of Oscar Grant goes down.  His reaction is decidedly not:  “Oh, well of course, this happens all the time, what do you expect?”   Rather, he cries tears of rage and anguish, both because he feels acutely the pain of Oscar’s life being stolen and because he knows that outrages like this are completely unnecessary and that humanity does not have to live this way.

This brings me to the second point I want to make here—and it is one I want to give even greater emphasis to, even while the first point above is very important and very related. The point I want to close this letter with is: We had better fully recognize and appreciate what we have in BA, and act accordingly.

I’ll say it again: We had better fully recognize and appreciate what we have in BA, and act accordingly.

And when I say “we had better,” that “we” is addressed to many different people and audiences.  Yes, I am most definitely speaking to revolutionaries and communists and to all those who are already deeply familiar with and supportive of BA.  But in saying “we,” I am also speaking to those who are just now—or just recently—learning about and getting introduced to this revolutionary leader—including, to quote BA, “Those this system has cast off, those it has treated as less than human” who “can be the backbone and driving force of a fight not only to end their own oppression, but to finally end all oppression, and emancipate all of humanity.”

To all the masses of people, here and around the world, who suffer brutal oppression minute after minute, day after day... and to all those who may not directly suffer this oppression but ache for a world where this oppression is no more, I want to say this:  If you do not know about Bob Avakian, or just recently learned about him, that is not your fault.  But you, and millions of other people, need to understand how incredibly rare and precious it is for the people of the planet that we have this revolutionary leader and act in accordance with that reality.

BA is not only the leader of the revolution, he is also a best friend to the masses of people.  He is a leader who has done decades of work in the realm of theory to bring forward the scientific method, strategy and vision needed to make revolution and bring into being a radically new world where all the horrors that humanity suffers unnecessarily would be no more. He is continuing to develop the advanced scientific method that he has forged, and apply that method to all of the big questions and obstacles confronting the revolution. He is able to break all of this down for people, without even slightly watering it down, in a way that everyone can understand, take up, and be inspired by. He has taken on the daily responsibility of leading a party and a movement to make revolution right here in the most powerful imperialist country in the world. He has dedicated his life to the emancipation of humanity. And, through all of this, he maintains a deep, visceral connection to and feeling for the masses of people who most desperately need this revolution.

A leader like this comes along very, very rarely.  And when this does happen, the absolute worst thing we could do is fail to recognize this, fail to act in accordance with this, fail to take this seriously, or take this for granted.  Instead, all of us—whether we have known about BA for decades, are just learning about him and what he represents, or anywhere in between, and whether you agree with BA about everything or not—must fully recognize and embrace what BA means for the people of the world.  We must study, and learn all we can from his incredible body of work on the biggest questions of revolution and human emancipation, as well as the lessons of who he is and what he stands for as a revolutionary leader.  We must realize that it is not just us who need to know about BA, his work and vision, and the leadership he is providing to this party and movement for revolution:  millions of people must know about all of this, and this must impact all of society.

Furthermore, and very crucially, we must fully confront the reality of what it would mean for the people of the world to lose this leader, and take extremely seriously that there are people and forces—those officially part of the powers-that-be, as well as those willing to do the work of the powers-that-be—who hate what BA represents and would like nothing more than to tear him down, silence him, and take him from the masses of people.  And we must be absolutely determined not to let that happen.

This means taking very seriously the need to do everything we can to protect and defend BA. This means denouncing and not giving a millimeter of space to those who slander and personally attack BA, because these attacks and slanders are part of creating the poisonous atmosphere and conditions that would make it easier for the powers-that-be, or those doing their bidding, to take BA from the people of the world.  Protecting and defending BA, and building a wall around him, also means boldly and sharply challenging those who may not be part of the camp of the enemy, but who are wallowing in, or at least being influenced by, arrogance, cynicism and snark, and who seek to dismiss without seriously engaging what BA has brought forward; this arrogance, snark, cynicism, and dismissal, regardless of the intent of those who fall into it, stands in the way of BA and all that he has brought forward having the reach and societal influence that this urgently needs to have.  And this, too, creates easier conditions for those who would try to silence and isolate BA and take him from the masses.

Few things in life are more tragic than a critical lesson learned too late. And it would truly be a tragedy if BA were taken from the people, and then people said: “Wow, I wish I had realized sooner what we had here.”

But the good news is: It is not too late.  We, and the masses of the planet, have BA right now.  We had better realize, and let everyone know, what that means.

A letter from Andy Zee

The Points of Attention: A Doorway and Guide to Making Revolution

| revcom.us

Dear Revcom,

Greetings from the Get Organized for an Actual Revolution Tour. Last week I had an opportunity to speak with members of the Tour and the Los Angeles Revolution Club about the special effort to make an impact with and to organize new people into the movement for revolution with a special focus on the Revolution Club’s “Points of Attention for the Revolution (POAs).” People found that this informal talk sharpened up the radical difference the POAs could make in organizing people into the revolution. Since this talk, the Tour has been going out applying and experimenting with this different approach. We thought that it would be helpful to others around the country if I reconstructed this informal presentation. I will do my best to recall what I said.

So here goes:

This two-week effort to highlight and focus work around the POAs has two purposes:

1. A radical re-orientation for how we are organizing people into the revolution right from the start of meeting them. This is a big change from what has been the working conception and practice of organizing people into the Revolution Clubs. So, we should recognize that over the next 12 days going out with the POAs in a concentrated way has, as one objective, transforming how we (the Tour) and the Revolution Clubs step to the masses.

2. And second, through this period we need to change the situation where we turn heads to revolution, to people getting involved with the effort to spread the POAs—impact society with them—and through which we make real breakthroughs in accumulating forces for revolution now, organizing people in new and basic ways.

I want to expand a bit more on the point of radical re-orientation or reset on organizing masses into the revolution. Think about how much a departure this is from what has been Club practice, to be oriented and have a way to go out and organize people from the outset of meeting them. Right after making the basic case for why we need a revolution and that we have the way and the leadership to do so, then as a key part of our “pitch,” we should put forth and give the people a living sense of the right process and basis of unity for them to be a part of the movement for revolution: to get organized and to organize themselves.

This process comprehends the understanding that people don’t go from zero to 60 miles an hour all at once. It comprehends that people act on what they come to understand through a process that involves learning while changing the world—initially through their spreading the word... Again, a process whereby people are out spreading word of, and in that way representing for, the revolution while they are getting deeper into what it’s all about themselves.

And, they should tell people that! The POAs provide a means for people to help solve a big problem for humanity—that most people don’t know there is another way we could live, that there is a way and leadership for a revolution for a radically new world, and that the forces for revolution need to grow now if there is to be a revolution. We are involving them in solving that problem. More, the POAs are a concentration of what the Rev Clubs are (or should be)—these are the principles we uphold and live by today and they embody the world we are fighting for.

The POAs embody a great deal of scientific understanding—they embody a great deal of the new communism and the character and leadership of BA. The Points of Attention are a basic concentration of the principles, methods, and goals of this revolution. The struggle by masses of people to live by and fight for these principles will also serve to “establish” revolution as a different pole in society, causing word of it to spread. It will be an impetus and a means by which people link up, form groups and networks, and get organized into the revolution. The popularization and engagement with the POAs will be an important link in a mass process whereby people change themselves towards becoming emancipators of humanity.

The Points of Attention are a pathway to BA—to the leadership we have in Bob Avakian, to the guidance from his body of work. As people dig into and apply these principles right away they will want and need to know more. In particular, BAsics and the films of BA are an essential “starter kit” for people seeking to change the world and get with the revolution. BAsics is the handbook of the movement for revolution. The film of the speech by BA in the summer of 2018 Why We Need An Actual Revolution And How We Can Really Make Revolution is foundational to all we are doing right now concentrated in the Tour. The book of the interview with Ardea Skybreak, Science and Revolution, On the Importance of Science and the Application of Science to Society, the New Synthesis of Communism and the Leadership of Bob Avakian provides an incredible course in understanding the import and method and approach of BA. In drawing attention to these works it is not my point to undercut or drown the power in the simplicity of the POAs by “piling on the books.” But rather to provoke everyone here to think about how with these POAs as the basic departure and a reference point through which people get into the revolution, there will be a felt need to go deeper, to seek out the science, strategy, and leadership that we have in BA—the ideological and political framework and understanding—the tools—to develop their understanding and to train them to be leaders to win others to the same process.

With this let’s get into what Bob Avakian says in the speech, “Why We Need... and How We Can...”

Spreading the word, particularly as this is done together with others in a planned, systematic way, can be an important step in joining the organized ranks of the revolution and taking part in the process of building the revolution. A crucial next step in making this revolution real is that Thousands need to get organized into the ranks of the revolution now, while millions are being influenced in favor of this revolution.Getting organized into the ranks of the revolution means acting together with others in a unified way, as an organized force, guided by the strategic plan and leadership for the revolution, building the revolution among broader masses of people, while also getting deeper into the principles, methods, and goals of this revolution, the basics of which are concentrated in the “Points of Attention for the Revolution.” A key form of revolutionary organization are the Revolution Clubs, which live by, propagate, and fight for the “Points of Attention.” The core of the Revolution Clubs are people deeply committed to revolution who closely follow the leadership of the Revolutionary Communist Party, which has the basis, in the new communism, to provide overall leadership for the revolution; but the Revolution Clubs also need to reach out to and involve growing numbers of people who are new to the revolution. The Revolution Clubs are a means through which “people can take part in and powerfully represent for the revolution in an organized way, as they learn more about the revolution and advance toward joining the Party.”

Networks of people, working together to spread the word about and organize people into the revolution, need to be built, and expanded, in all parts of the country—and linked together. In areas where the Party and the Revolution Clubs have not yet established an organized presence, or in circumstances where people have not yet come into direct contact with this organized presence of the revolution but have become aware of the core principles and goals of the revolution, they should reach out to and involve others they can draw forward around those core principles and goals; they should link up with the central leadership of the revolution for assistance and direction in organizing a Revolution Club among the people they are bringing into the revolution, on the basis of the “Points of Attention for the Revolution,” which are included in the pamphlet HOW WE CAN WIN, and are posted at revcom.us. A crucial “connecting link” in all this is the Party’s website revcom.us and newspaper Revolution, which “sharply expose the crimes of this system, scientifically analyze why it cannot be reformed, and give guidance and direction for people to work in a unified way for revolution.” In everything we do, it needs to be clearly kept in mind, and boldly put forward to people, that, whatever part of the country we are in, and whatever the size of our forces at any given time, we are doing all this as part of a national movement, together with people in other parts of the country, aiming to impact all of society and building a revolution to overthrow the whole system, with the whole world in mind.

I have bolded two sections of these paragraphs to reflect the attention I drew to these sentences during the presentation even as I emphasized that these are not separate points from what BA is describing, but to underscore that even as people in the Tour and Club have had this speech for several months, the role of the POAs as described by BA has been overlooked by all of us.

I underscore this here because when the two-week POA focus for the Tour was announced there were tendencies to see the POAs only as a way to appeal to people’s desire for a just world—a statement of morality divorced from revolution. As important as it is that the POAs draw forward people’s often suppressed hatred for the way masses of people are set against each other in this society, the POAs are more than that, they are a crucial pivot in the whole process of making revolution. They are core principles of the revolution—polemical statements of what this revolution is for and what not: Point #1: for the emancipation of humanity, not personal gain... and each of the six sets forth an important ideological dividing line. The POAs set forth the methods of the revolution—guidelines for how we relate to and struggle with each other and critically in Point #5: on searching for and fighting for the truth. And, the POAs concentrate key goals of the revolution—the emancipation of humanity in Point #1 and that as it says in Point #6 since we are serious about aiming for an actual revolution to overthrow the system, “at this stage we do not initiate violence and we oppose all violence against the people and among the people.”

Everything we are doing is aiming for “the time when the masses of people can be led to go for revolution, all out, with a real chance to win.” For this to happen we need to Prepare the Ground—change the way different forces are aligned today: putting this revolution on the map as a pole, an alternate authority in neighborhoods, schools and nationwide. If people knew of these Points of Attention, if they knew there was an actual force all across the country who were living by and fighting for these principles, wouldn’t that go a ways to preparing the ground?

We need to Prepare the People. How? In one important aspect—by bringing forward thousands of people who are living by and fighting for these POAs—while many more people are appreciative of, looking towards, and supporting those who are today doing so. Recall what BA said in the film REVOLUTION—NOTHING LESS! about the “church ladies” appreciating someone doing something about these youth out here. And, if there is an organized force around the Points Of Attention—in clubs and networks all across the country—then we will have taken a serious step forward in Preparing the Vanguard, in bringing forward the organized force with the principles, methods and goal that could be forged into a vanguard party to organize an actual revolution and win.

The POAs are not something separate from the strategy for revolution. A key part of the strategy is captured in the slogan, Fight the Power, and Transform the People, for Revolution.

Have you noticed that POA # 2 begins: “We fight for a world where ALL the chains are broken.” Or, that POA # 3 begins with: We fight for a world without borders, and for equality among different peoples, cultures and languages.” And, that the substance of all six POAs is what guides us today in transforming the people—which fundamentally means changing their thinking—and do constitute a great deal of what we are fighting for in this revolution: POA #1: “...the emancipation of humanity...”

The POAs are not a pipe dream, or some utopic scheme to get followers. This revolution for the new communism is real. We have been going out among the masses of people from Sacramento to UCLA to most recently the streets of South Central LA at the corner of Crenshaw and Slauson where Nipsey Hussle was gunned down in front of his clothing store. Everywhere we go, we are bringing alive for people that their lives and the things they care about can NOT fundamentally be solved under this system—even as today they largely don’t know this, or why it is so.  In fact, they have been systematically indoctrinated by the media, the educational system, the culture, as well as the way in which this system sets people against each other, on a world scale; they are locked within frameworks that they need to break from.

To make this come alive and be sharply present in people’s thinking we bring them 5 STOPS—five horrific forms of oppression that this system can not eliminate, that can not be reformed away. This provides the material basis for making revolution including that people do care about one or all of these 5 STOPS.

These 5 STOPS present TWO CHOICES to the people: Either live with this and the oppression will go on and on, or, as BA says in the speech, Make Revolution.  And, if you want to be a part of making revolution, you need to spread the word of the revolution and GET ORGANIZED—and the 6 POINTS OF ATTENTION provide the principles by which you can do that.

So, as one of the people from the Tour put it: We have 5 STOPS, 2 CHOICES, AND 6 POINTS OF ATTENTION. Easy to remember and concentrating the path to getting organized for revolution.

We can recognize that this is vastly different than what has been common practice in the Rev Clubs. The Tour has been going out to provoke people out of the frameworks they have been living in—whether elections, the dog eat dog of entrepreneurialism (legit or not), intersectionality, etc... We have been putting forth problem and solution, leading with BAsics 3:1 and how that presents two choices: live with this system or make revolution. But, then while we may say what’s missing is you, the agitation and how we are oriented towards involving people does not break down the divide where people say, “I’ll check it out,” or, “I admire your dedication, it's good you are doing this,” and then we just get their contact information or invite them to an event. Our agitation, our “pitch,” has not given people a way in, a way to take this up and run with it.

Instead, we have had a model where to get with this movement people have to be a full time activist on short notice.  More, they feel they have to know a lot about revolution and communism to be a part of this. If you think for five minutes about this, with this method and approach we will at best aggregate scores of hundreds of people, one by one. This will not a revolution make. Actually, it is antithetical—opposed—to the revolution we need where people are working on the problems of the revolution including organizing for it!

The point is not that we don’t have to lead. But, rather lead how? The POAs provide a way right from when we meet people for them to get into what this is all about, what it’s for and how to think about it. It provides a way for people to go out to others with these POAs and discuss them. We should find the right ways to lead and assist—being sure people have the tools they need from the website or in print to go deeper. In this way we should develop networks of people and beginning Revolution Clubs. People need to be connected to BA right from the start—giving them the science and understanding they need. We should be connected to learn from their questions and to guide them. A measure of how we are doing is whether and how people respond to calls that the revolution makes—such as for this POA picnic on April 28.

As people take up the POAs and start getting them around, linking up and talking with others about them, and forming beginning organization, what do they need to understand in a basic way? They should be getting a real living sense of the strategy for revolution, the critical importance of advancing through lively ideological struggle, including having a sense of how to do battle with the backwardness from different sections of the people such as posturing opportunists (see the fire extinguisher award to Al Sharpton)—even coming to see how sometimes these people assume the words of revolution. New people really need to be able to increasingly recognize bullshit wherever they encounter it, and use their developing networks, or groups of like-minded people, to regularly discuss and sum up these encounters, and advances forged through them, all as part of building scientific revolutionary “muscle”!

We have work to do ourselves to incorporate all of this into our agitation and beginning encounters with people and into our work overall. There is a lot of thinking and experimentation we need to do. All of it aimed at getting to a situation where millions can be led to go for revolution, all-out, with a real chance to win.

Points of Attention for the Revolution

Diya “Maya” Cruz is a revolutionary who was arrested at University of Chicago on March 1, 2018 and faces 7 years in prison for representing for revolution and participating in a protest of 11 minutes of silence for the 11 million undocumented immigrants under attack by the Trump/Pence regime. UCPD aggressively threatened the peaceful protesters, grabbed Maya, and accused her of battery.  Maya was the only one injured.

The University of Chicago claims to champion free speech but their police arrested and charged Maya with a felony for exercising free speech standing up for immigrants. Since this protest, government and extra-legal terror against immigrants has taken a huge leap. This is a travesty of justice and must be stopped.

You’ve read this article and now you need to be part of making sure revcom.us is able to make an urgently needed leap and transformation.

Step Up to My $1000 Challenge to Support the National Revolution Tour

| revcom.us

This $1,000 Challenge has now been met. Another donor, who was inspired by this Challenge, has posed a new $1,000 Challenge to be matched by May 7. Many thousands of dollars more are needed this month and we hope to overfulfill this matching donation.

It is through studying the scientific work of Bob Avakian, that I am convinced that the only way out of this hell, is through a revolution that digs up this system's rotten roots and brings into being a whole new system that is not built on exploitation, but on the needs of the people and the highest aspirations of humanity.

I weep when I hear about the children in cages at the border with Mexico. I am enraged when time and time again, the lives of Black and Brown people are stolen by murdering pigs with no repercussions; and how the youth in the ghettos are pitted against one another to kill for a spot on the corner that is not theirs anyway. I am horrified when I imagine what it is like to be a Palestinian, forced to live, and barely survive, in an open air prison in Gaza. I am shocked when we can see and feel the actual climate disruption causing death and destruction all over the planet and there are no viable plans to stop it. I stand with my sisters who have been sexually harassed, beaten and raped every minute in this patriarchy. I grieve with the LGBT community as they are targeted through actions of hate or die at alarming rates through suicide. I have come to understand through years of delving into the work of BA, that these things are the result of the workings of capitalism and imperialism.

This kind of world is intolerable to me and it should be to you! If you REALLY get into this revolution, you will learn that the world does NOT have to be this way.

If you contribute to support this tour, you can help make it possible for hundreds and thousands of people to have the opportunity to learn about what this revolution is all about, what difference it can make in the world, and how we can win.

I am inspired by what the revolutionaries on the tour are doing. I loved that Noche Diaz presented a fire extinguisher award to Al Sharpton as a symbol that he plays the role of “extinguishing the fire” of outrage and desire to stand up to the powers that be and pulling them back into the system that causes needless suffering in the first place.

It was powerful that a white male comrade was kicked out of a “safe space” because he read a poem written about sexual trauma against women. There are no safe spaces in the world we live in and the team came back standing firm against intersectionality with the message that this would not lead to emancipation. The revolutionaries are out front at the Bernie Sanders rallies going up against the Bullshit of the democrats and solutions that will lead nowhere.

This Tour urgently needs our contributions to stay on the road -- for travel costs; lodging; printing costs; supplies; food; reading materials and more. This revolution is the only hope for a world without borders; a world where people can live in dignity no matter their race or gender or whom they love; a world where the planet is protected; where there are no wars for empire; and a world in which life is worth living.

Join me in donating to make this possible. Do it now, before May 4 and double your impact with my dollar for dollar match!

With warm thanks,

A Mental Health Professional and Supporter of the Revolution

“Field Reports” From Taking Out the Revolution, April 25

| revcom.us

Over the past several days, the National Tour has continued to go out in Los Angeles, working to draw people into the revolution. They have ranged from a South Central neighborhood, to UCLA, to a community college on the East Side: finding the ways for masses of people to come into and work on the problems of the revolution. The Tour is building right now for a picnic this Sunday. We’re including reports from their work and encounters to help give everyone a sense of what they’re working on and how they’re viewing it, and to foster the widest possible ferment over how to break through.

In the neighborhood

#1 “Deep Exchanges”

Three of us went out yesterday for a little under two hours. We were planning to go to the community center someone told us about in the area but never made it there. We set a couple appointments on our way down to meet up with two people who had taken some stacks of the POAs on Saturday.

In addition to those discussions, where we gave them more materials and talked more concretely about Sunday’s picnic, there were other, really deep exchanges. One important thing to note is that there are several repeat discussions we had with people who had gotten our materials in the days before. One dude had talked to one of our people on Saturday and really appreciated that we were out here. He understood we were bringing a wider view to people, but still in a framework of “doing good for the community.” We talked more about this, struggled over the question of choices... He wants to come Sunday but raised contradictions of being in that neighborhood (where there are disputes between sets). We got into this some but there is more to work through. He did say he would help poster with us today.

As we were walking away, a couple guys in a car pulled us over. One said he'd seen me doing agitation at some point and wanted the materials and the other dude got the flyer and said, “Oh, good... y'all are doing another picnic, I missed the last one.” The guy who’d seen us doing agitation said something like, “I know we’re being messed over by the system, I’m an ex-con. I can tell you all about it.” This was brief because we had to head out, but I sent them a video link from BA by text.

Finally, we talked to the person who had suggested we go by the community center. He’d read the POAs but hadn’t gotten more into BA’s recent stuff and was still raising that he didn’t really want to participate.... that he’s more like on both sides of things, needs to learn more, etc. He would be interested in coming on Sunday, but he has to work. He did take some flyers to leave out at work. In struggling over the need for him to step into this now, on different levels and in a way he feels comfortable, he said that if he gave people stuff, they’d ask him questions and he wouldn’t know how to answer. First, I said it’s ok to say he doesn’t know something and point people to get deeper... also, that there’s a Revolution Club and he could contact the people here locally... then I thought better and added that there’s a whole national movement and a website that he could write to with stuff that comes up. We also talked about BAsics and BA’s ability to break things down... BA as a resource. I showed him BAsics but we didn’t have any copies (!) and he was interested in getting it. He said he’d pull the money together and get it today.

In the meantime, last night, he texted me: “I’ve been watching a few videos of Bob Avakian, and really enjoyed/learned quite a bit. At this moment, I’ve staked my claim here [he texted a link to a progressive nationalist group]. Maybe some quid pro quo can be found in this struggle of ours. This talk from BA was very enlightening... I listened to a talk from BA from years ago pertaining to this matter, and respected his in depth comprehensive take on this. See you tomorrow purchase that book from you. Power to the People.”

There were some heavy discussions with people about the life, revenge... and one dude who very movingly talked about finding solace in “my best friend” and showed me his beer can. One point this latter guy made was about the need for us to paint a vision of what kind of world we’re fighting for. This, I felt, was an important criticism from him. This is in the POAs but also made me think about the need to make more use of the “What If’s...” clip as part of this...

Also, I left this out but there was concrete discussion/wrangling about getting people to the picnic and why spread the POAs.

#2: Taking This Up in Beginning Ways

From another comrade, same neighborhood:

One experience I had with a guy who was in “the life,” who was appreciative of the flyers and what we were putting to him about revolution and getting organized to overthrow this system. His response to this was that he couldn't get with this, when asked why he said his future is already written because of what he represents, he pointed to Nipsey and said that’s what’s going to happen to me.

I posed to him the challenge of our life is going to be about something or nothing.

Later, I thought this challenge should of been done different, by indicting this system that keeps us in these conditions where we are trained to look at each other as the enemy and go and kill each other, then this same system keep us locked in to thinking like there is no way out! That this is just the way our future will be and there is nothing we can do about it, and the fact that we don’t have to accept this future and we can go to work on changing that right now, stepping into this revolution and what we do have (strategy, leadership, science) and what’s needed is you.

There was also a guy who we met last time who wanted to go check out the POAs on his own before doing anything else; he got in touch a day later and said he liked this message and wanted to be a part of it. Yesterday he went to a rap concert in LA and handed out about 15 or 20 of the flyers and a few stickers. He said he had a good response, that people liked them. He said he read the flyer out loud to some people and told them to call the number on the flyer. We talked about the importance of that and the fact that he was a part of this revolution by spreading this; he appreciated that.

I think it’s important, examples like this that bridge that divide of “us” and “them” where people, like this person above, sees this as theirs and taking it where they go and see the importance in others knowing about it, but also this thing about putting the problems of the revolution to them, what we do have but also what we don’t.

At a college: “I decided to have a solo outing with the POAs before and after one of my classes...”

From a member of the Revolution Club:

I was inspired by the recent videos being uploaded from the Revolution Tour of students giving their impressions of the Points of Attention for the Revolution. I decided to have a solo outing with the POAs before and after one of my classes, and I ended up posting up about 50 flyers with the POAs and the contact information for the Revolution Club in and around the campus, on poles and other visible public spaces (in bus stops, outside shops). This being a solo outing, I took a step back to think about how I could impact blocks of students, but I found this hard to do just by solo flyering. I talked to about five students about the POAs, taking cue from what was modeled in those videos and the recent practice of the Tour. I asked people what they thought of these POAs and what would the world be like if society was set up with these in mind.

One young woman really dug Point #2 and Point #3 when I read them to her. She agreed that the world would be a far better place if these were taken up by large numbers of people, but she was hesitant to spread them. Still there was a divide that I don’t know how to break down. I explained to her that spreading these Points of Attention is something that one can do even if they don’t know very much about revolution and communism, but the hesitation was real despite her high level of unity with what was put forward. A white student in his mid-20s held a long conversation with me which ranged broadly, and I had to constantly struggle to bring it back to the 2 choices (leave the world as it is, OR make revolution), 5 stops, and 6 POA points on which the conversation had been grounded, particularly the 2 choices, which he disagreed on.

This is a larger phenomenon we have been running up against: a lot of people don’t agree that there are only two choices. I could tell that this guy took a totally academic approach to this exchange, and I tried to bring it back to the visceral reality that all the suffering and exploitation that the masses face is not just horrific but unnecessary, the leadership we have to make the revolution humanity needs, and the strategy to make revolution are things we have not had before in this country. The biggest obstacle in his thinking was American chauvinism; even though he had some heart for the conditions of people around the world and he acknowledged that the whole global economy is based on exploitation, he saw the major solution to this being tariffs. Another huge obstacle in his thinking was something BA has focused a lot on: the lack of belief that we can have a better way of organizing society than capitalism, that even with its flaws, what more can we do than tinker around with capitalist democracy? I tried to respond simply with, “this is the system we have, but we could have a whole better system, but it takes a revolution to get there.” Although this student didn’t agree with the need for revolution, I challenged him to dig into those POAs, and ask himself “is this real? Would the world really be different if we all, and the society, lived by them and fought for them?” and to check out the website, which he said he would do.

Taking Up the Points of Attention at a Community College

First, some numbers:

ALSO IMPORTANT:
We spoke to several members of student groups and student government who were very friendly and supportive. They are actively working to get us a room to show BA and give a presentation about the Tour and the Revolution. They’ve already texted back and forth about availability, etc. Need to pin this down.

***********

The campus was overwhelmingly friendly to the 5-2-6 message. A solid 40% of the students we actually approached stopped to listen and responded very favorably to the basic message of the revolution, or to the 5 Stops poster. The campus is majority Latino. A lot of texture to sum up and work to do to build on this, and take to a whole higher level.

#2

On Monday, April 23. Our team went to a small junior college with a number of DACA students, Latinos as well as Asian students.

We set up a table in the quad with books and other materials. We had the 5 Stops displays and the #BEB display. We had a tablet to show people clips as well.

The campus was relatively empty, and the stream of people walking by was pretty small. Yet the overall dominant response from people was very positive and receptive. People were very open to talking and would take more time out of their day for us. As compared to some of the more elite schools where it can be difficult to get anyone to stop and talk.

People stopped to read the 5 Stops; they would say things like “I agree with these things.” People would read the POAs and say “Whoa, what is this about?” “Is this a club on campus?” “Are you a non-profit or something?”

Among the people who had a positive response there were different subsections. There were people who were more actively engaging us and those people tended to hear our message as ‘big change’ and in response people would give us a ‘big thumbs up!’ But as things got clearer what a revolution really is and what the two choices are, things would divide out again. It was right here where people would build bridges out. They would pose why they thought we were wrong about there being only two choices (less common), or why you couldn’t do anything at all (more common), which most people raised because people are set in their ways and we can’t tell them what to think.

There were people who were more “passive,” and kind of acted like they were caught off guard by the conversation and didn’t have much to say about the world yet, but at the same time would express that they thought what we were doing was positive.

Overall we organized about 26 people who took about 250 flyers in all (about 10 each). And we ourselves distributed about 180 and sold a BAsics. We showed clips from BA about 5 times (The System Has No Future for the Youth). We met some student body officers who are helping us get a room and set up a meeting, and another student agreed to take responsibility to form a Facebook group for students (at this campus) in the revolution.

What happened as we engaged people individually:

There was a table set up next to ours. The campus is in the middle of student elections, so there were a half-dozen students giving out pizza and petitioning their students for votes. They first walked up to us off of the #BEB poster. They really wanted to know what it was. “Try and guess,” we said. They thought it must be bad because Trump was on it, but at the same time Bernie, Buttigieg, and AOC were on there so... now they are confused.

We pulled out the broadsheet and revealed what it was, Bourgeois Electoral Bullshit, and opened up to the middle of the broadsheet and immediately they said, “Can I please have this?” They poured over all the war crimes, and one student said he had just learned about one of these in class. One of the students really wanted to become a politician; he said he wanted to be president, yet at the same time was really drawn to what we were saying. Two of the group were more drawn to us and spent some time with us talking. One student was a part of six groups on campus, the other was a student body senator. They agreed to and offered to get us a room on campus where we could have a meeting and show a film. They even offered to help so we could put up flyers and advertise around campus (since it requires a special stamp to be posted). They offered to invite people they knew in clubs and groups.

A couple of young Latino males stopped to read the 5 Stops. I engaged them and talked to them about the 5 Stops and the POAs. They both thought the 5 Stops were horrible things that should be stopped. We had gone back and forth for some time about that these things can’t be reformed and the system has to be overthrown and that we have two choices. I kept posing back two problems: that, one, people don’t know about this, and two,  there have been all sorts of people who are interested on campus and who are going to spread the word about this, but that this has to be cohered into some form of organization or else all these people who want a revolution will be off on their own.

It was after this that one of the youths raised how he knew as soon as he took this out he would get shit for it, and didn’t really think it was right to force your views on other people who don’t want to hear it. I went another round with him that people have their heads up their asses, but also care about these 5 Stops and that we are not going for everybody right now. I gave the example of what would it change if there was even 20 people on this campus who were organized and serious about this. He agreed that it would make a huge difference. So I posed those two problems again in relation to the two choices, and the student thought that he should start a Facebook group for students [at this campus] in the revolution so that we could keep everybody in the know. He thought we should organize people to get together at a restaurant or something, and that we should all go together to spread the word...

We met someone else, a young Latino male who was a former police cadet. He really thought the 5 Stops were wrong. He asked me what we meant by revolution and I contrasted it to what Bernie means by revolution. “We aren’t talking about dividing more of the spoils of empire, we are talking about overthrowing the system and getting rid of the empire.” I mentioned briefly about where all wealth comes from and briefly mentioned the Congo where children as young as four are mining coltan. This deeply disturbed him. He said he had no idea stuff like that was happening and brought up these children mining in the Congo several times throughout our conversation. He thought the police could be reformed (there’s good cops and bad cops). I showed him BAsics 1:24 and he said he halfway thought it was true. He purchased a BAsics and wants to come to the meeting next week.

Points of Attention for the Revolution

From NYC: When People Step Out...

From a member of the National Revolution Tour currently in New York

| revcom.us

I wanted to share a few thoughts... in terms of this historic objective problem, it seems that putting the problems of the revolution to masses of people from the beginning is something that we need, I feel, to transform further, in our orientation, agitation, overall approach. We have gotten sharper in our agitation (although it’s a continuous work in progress), and we’ve had experiences of challenging and inspiring people and beginning ways in which people have stepped forward. In part it was because our agitation sharpened up (the 2 choices, the Points of Attention for the Revolution(POAs) and “the bridge to a different world is revolution” point), for example at the high school, instead of agitating while students just passed us by, we started challenging the students, asking them questions in the form of a provocation and challenge (especially once we wielded more the POAs): do you want to live in a world where women are treated like human beings? (And other variations on this) And demanding students stop and answer these questions. This, along with “5 STOPS” visuals, creates a situation where yes still too many students just keep walking but some actually stop and answer the questions posed, and still others (a minority) stop to talk, engage, struggle, etc.

One particular youth (I’ll call him Benny) stopped and got on the bullhorn (after hearing some of the things we’d been saying, the challenges posed to students, etc.) to challenge his peers, “stop thinking about video games, sex, this is about your future...” Benny on the phone said he had originally stopped because he has personal experience with the things we were saying, he said (I’m paraphrasing) women are not treated right, I have friends who are women who are mistreated and disrespected, also immigrants... He also said he agreed with the BEB newspaper about the “crimes against humanity” from those in power. I’m leaving out much of our conversation (again, mainly the basics of the 2 choices, POAs and his role in solving the problems of the revolution) but the point is that I did pose to him the problems of the revolution, that people don’t know about this and spreading the POAs is (at least one way) how we’re going at this problem, and how all this is part of making revolution. He took extras to pass out on the bus he takes after school.

Last week we planned (and did) a speak out twice at the park where many of the students go thru after school, so I posed to him the importance of letting others know, which he did. Wednesday and Thursday he came by for several minutes and brought a friend here and a friend there. And Thursday in particular he got on the bullhorn and called over friends walking by to come over (friends that were either mocking him or maybe more questioning what the hell was he doing standing with “us”). But Benny was not seeing a separation between “us vs them” when he got on the bullhorn and read POA 2 and 5, he took the first steps in breaking down some of the barriers... but how to go further is the challenge.

To back track, two of the people asking him “Benny what the hell are you doing?” were these young women who passed by, but he called them over and then one of them ended up getting on the bullhorn and started chanting “viva la revolución” and then something in Spanish along the lines of men think they have the right to disrespect women but NO! women have rights...and she ended with “everyone in the world have rights.”

And there’s been experiences of other high school students initially stepping into this thru taking materials (extra POAs to put up, or putting on “The System Has No Future...” sticker, donating some money for these materials). And we are following up this week with a plan to go out with Benny and maybe others in the areas they live or areas they want to go (this is something we put to Benny) to get POAs up (this week is spring break for high schools). After summing this up we also started to read quotes from BAsics together with the POAs as part of people connecting up, straight up with Bob Avakian (BA) and his leadership. A key part of the plan is to engage the students with BA, this spring break and when they get back to school. I’ve gotten the link to BA videos to Benny and other students.

The main point is that we need to be putting the problems of the revolution to people; we should be provoking, challenging and inspiring and parallel to that has to be putting the problems before people where they see they have a role to play and that this very positive transformation of society cannot be done without them and lots more people like them getting involved, in an organized way, and helping to spread this and helping to organize lots of like-minded people into this! Relatedly, we (myself included) don’t enough emphasize the last part of that sentence, the organizing “lots of like-minded people into this!” I’ve been more focused on asking people to spread this and why this is meaningful revolutionary work (which it is!). But the challenge needs to be put to people, and people inspired to do so, to go out and get lots more people into this revolution. This is something I’d like to think through more.

***

Here I’m just ruminating more broadly although sparked by a few things on my mind (which I’ll speak to briefly below). Our problem is still too much not leading and working together with many others to lead many more others, etc.; but as this transforms, and I feel as part of getting to that transformation, our approach to people needs to be one where ideas and suggestions are not readily dismissed and build plenty of room for people to make mistakes and learn and understand (and lead in a way that comprehends) that people (those whose aspirations has been awakened and see the need to take this up) will come with all kinds of ideas (good ones and even seemingly quirky ones or that actually are quirky or worse).

We should comprehend that people will also make mistakes and that this “process” will be messy, in fact very messy most of the time and not neat. And we should not dismiss ideas just because they seem like we’ve done them before but be open to people taking this up based on what has been inspired and awakened in them (meaning on the basis of going back to the 2 choices, POAs, the point that “the bridge to that better world is revolution” and the role they play to make this happen) and then lead this process, not just one on one but with masses of people, summing up and continually going back with them.

How to apply solid core with lots of elasticity based on the solid core? This is something worth grappling with and ruminating with further, among ourselves in the Revolution Club and those coming forward, and more broadly. As more and more people step into the revolution, and aspirations awakened, many ideas will be flowing and so how not to tail and how not to shut down things? I’ve noticed among the Revolution Club sometimes we do that, we shut things down too quickly among ourselves and with others. But the contradiction is that while some of us have been around longer and know some things, the reality is that this is uncharted road and we must remain open to things (including to ideas people have) and approach things with science and imagination. We need more experimentation, etc. The point is that we are solving problems in the real world, and reality is very complex, but that’s what we are doing and must lead many more people, in fact thousands and thousands to do exactly that.

I was recounting the story of struggling with some high school students where I challenged them to take up the POAs, distribute them but also wield them, if they see a woman being harassed or someone being made fun of because of their language other than English, use the POAs and say no that doesn’t go here, we’re part of a movement for a real revolution that’s fighting for a world where all the chains are broken, all that degrading stuff doesn’t go here (something like that). Relatedly several Revolution Club members made a video posted on FB about “what if” we’d had the POAs back in high school, when youth have to deal with so much of the degrading culture and so suffocated with the idea that there is nothing you can do or that there is no alternative to this system of capitalism/imperialism. This was good, and we need more of this; and especially we need all kinds of initiative taken that’s aiming to and grappling with (among other things) breaking down this “us versus them” contradiction.

As an aside, the question of “revenge” versus emancipation has been coming up recently in discussions with the Revolution Club and more broadly. A member of the Revolution Club told a story and recounted the advice his older brother gave him back in the day, if someone does something to you then “do what they do to you but twice as hard.” Another person pointed out in a discussion about how common revenge is as a unifying approach in many countries and really around the world. And nobody else on the planet speaks more sharply to this then Bob Avakian in many of his works and it’s something we should wield more often, among many of the people we encounter (from the different strata since this is a question up and down all strata even if it takes different expressions). I’d be surprised if this hasn’t been a big question in L.A. with the murder of the rapper and the different gangs and others who’ve come out. The striving to unite right now is very positive... but how do we not let things “re-assert” themselves given this system really has no future for the youth and that the Nipsey model (the entrepreneurial model) won’t lead to liberation. Again, I was really glad to see the clips from REVOLUTION—NOTHING LESS! and from Revolution: Why It's Necessary, Why It's Possible, What It's All About where BA goes deep at this!

And we do have to keep coming back to what is the material basis for doing what we’re setting out to do with this National Revolution Tour as key to building this movement for revolution, making revolution and getting to a radically different world. Going back to the excerpt “The Five STOPS” from Bob Avakian’s speech Why We Need An Actual Revolution, And How We Can Really Make Revolution and keep grounding ourselves and others in the entire film and Q&As is key in all this.

Briefly (but relatedly), I teamed up with someone recently and went around to talk to people who work in this important part of town. He put on the BA Speaks: REVOLUTION—NOTHING LESS! T-shirt as we talked with and handed out the POAs and the BEB [“Bourgeois Electoral Bullshit”] newspaper. Most discussions were brief but positive. One important lesson here is that the person I teamed up with was really grappling with this “us versus them” contradiction, he couldn’t understand why not many more people were getting with this. His ideas on approach had lots of insight, mixed in with other things I didn’t necessarily fully agree with.

But the main thing I’m trying to highlight is that aspirations were awakened through his engagement with videos and other materials from the National Revolution Tour (for example the video of Noche Diaz calling out Al Sharpton’s role in always trying to put out and extinguish the righteous anger of the masses of people every time there is a cold blooded murder by the police of Black and Brown people) and other things as well. He was deep and grappling on a problem that we need to solve, how to bring many people forward into the movement for revolution. And while in the main people we talked to responded positively, there was one occasion that was not so positive. We got into how do you deal with people who don’t want to hear it, even getting nasty about not wanting to hear it. I told him we shouldn’t and don’t take nonsense from people and it’s important to come back sharply ideologically, “ok you wanna keep them mental shackles and keep the world as it is, ok then, go on then, we got nothing to say to you.” Bob Avakian goes into this in a sharp way in the speech REVOLUTION—NOTHING LESS!

Other deep questions came up as we summed up, having to do with the strategic approach to revolution, what about certain sections of the middle class, can they be won to revolution and how? How about “friendly neutrality”? He said, “this is my first time going out with this, so I’m bound to learn new things!” But another main lesson I wanted to draw was that as people take this up, they’re bound to run into opposition and a lot of bullshit. And as people run into difficulties it’s important that we fight to not let assert the strong almost gravitational pull towards the “us versus them” divide—that because there is bound to be negative experiences in taking this out that perhaps I can’t do this and maybe I’ll stay over here supporting from afar and you (revcoms) be over there. We have to challenge the notion that those stepping into this, taking those initial steps, (the many people that need to step into this from all kinds of backgrounds) couldn’t do this. Again, what is the material basis to do what we’re setting out to do? Continually coming back to this and grounding and re-grounding more and more people in this (in BA's scientific method and approach) will be fundamental in making some breakthroughs.

Sharp Struggle, Wide Embrace

| revcom.us

From a member of the National Revolution Tour:

There is so much richness and texture to report on and I don’t have much time.

A few patterns to point to from the neighborhood and then I’ll get into some more specifics. First, among people in the life, going to Hoover Park seemed out of the question to people because of the beef between sets. This came up a number of times in different ways. Second, there are others we’ve now had a number of discussions with (in particular, the guys drinking in front of a local store) for whom coming is more of an ideological question of whether they’ll step into the revolution and let themselves hope. Third, we met a number of younger people in the neighborhood who are not in the life who fell out in different ways. These are important people to reach because they are influenced by the same circumstances but with different levels of openness. Finally, there are a couple people we are more actively “working with” who are taking responsibility for the revolution in different ways, reporting back, etc.

In all this, there are some very deep things being joined and opened up... for some, in the first discussions we are having... others from some of the repeated discussions. A lot of this is still very centered on whether the problem is the people, or the system. We have been getting up the new “no more generations” poster and used it in a couple important exchanges joining this question.

Also, we met with the person who runs an Afrocentric community center nearby. It’s used as a meeting place with local programming and arts projects. This was a place someone in the neighborhood suggested we go check out. I got a call back and a few of us went over to meet with the person who runs it. The director is familiar with BA from hearing him on Michael Slate’s show. He’s revolutionary minded even as he thinks you have to use “every tool at your disposal to make real change.” He said BA resonates with him and he can’t think of anything he’s ever said he disagrees with. We talked with him about the Tour, our mission, played the trailer of the new speech and gave him the text for it which he was interested in reading. He wanted to know how we all got involved in the revolution and we talked about this... it was a pretty rich discussion overall. He also wanted to know the response we’ve been getting from the neighborhood, our work, etc. And all three of us talked about this more.

We did put the different problems to him in terms of the overall mission of the Tour, but also asked his thinking on the terrain. He was somewhat reticent about this but did talk about how people are tired and, he thinks, ready to hear a serious argument for real change. He said that stepping out with our message in the way we are should separate the wheat from the chaff in a good way. We talked about wanting to show the BA speech at his center. He’s interested and we’re going to go through the process to apply for this.

He was glad we reached out and thanked us several times for what we’re doing. This is someone we should be working with going forward as well and we did invite him to the picnic.

We also went into a nearby school where it looked like a lot of students were getting out early and we passed out a bunch of flyers. Unlike other high schools, most of the students took them. At the Burger King later, when we sat down to have lunch, we talked to four of these kids who read the POAs out loud to each other (while doing an Instagram Live) and were excited about this. They kept saying, “hell yes.” We got their info to send them a BA video to watch and post.

I had a very heavy/important discussion with one student on the corner which I think is worth walking through in detail. He was standing with about 4 or 5 guys and seemed to be the leader of the group. He and they were kind of fucking around but took the flyers. We said what we were about—on a National Tour to organize for an actual revolution to overthrow this system—and he looked over the flyer while we pointed to the POAs and told him what they were. He saw the info about the picnic, and said, “Hell naw, I ain’t going over there, that’s enemy territory.” Even though I knew what he meant, I asked what he meant. He kind of laughed and said more to his friends more than me, “My parents told me all about that.” And he named the other set with an insulting nickname. I said, “Really, enemies huh? Let me ask you, what do those enemies look like?” His friends were still more messing around, laughing, rolling up the flyers. He got serious and said, “They look like me.” I asked, “So you think they control that territory over there?” He said, “No, I don’t think so.” I asked him who he thought controlled it and he said, “The government does.” I said he was right about that, and then asked who controlled the ground he was standing on, and he said, “Yeah, the government does.”

I did some agitation about how this system has people pitted against each other, but really who are the real criminals, their armies marauding all over the world, their bombs tearing children apart limb from limb, their pig police running roughshod through these neighborhoods, tearing babies from their parents at the border... the motherfuckers who run this system are the criminals and they are perfectly happy to have oppressed people fighting and killing each other, it helps them because they want to kill you off anyway. His friends had stopped listening and kind of walked away telling him they had to catch the bus. But he was intent and told them to chill, they’d catch the next bus anyway. He said he knew something about the government. His aunt told him about how they made all their money off of slavery. I said he was right about that and that same shit continues in different form today.

He responded, “Yeah, I know all that shit, but fuck it, I got to take care of me and my family, I got to get my money. I got to get up out of here and take care of myself, my people.”

First, I said, be real, most likely this system won’t let you make shit. Just a tiny handful make it up and out. But even more fundamentally, let me ask, you’re saying you want to get rich. Where do you think wealth comes from anyway? He answered, “From the government too?” I said not really, it comes from fucking over people just like you all over the world. I pulled out my phone and asked if he knew what prevented the phone from overheating in his hand. He said he didn’t know and I explained about the mineral coltan. That it comes from different parts of the world, including the Congo. That there have been resource wars raging in the Congo for years which have, in part, resulted in millions of women being raped. That there are kids his age and younger working in those mines. That’s where wealth comes from. Then those minerals and other raw materials get shipped to China where millions of people slave away in sweatshops working 18-hour days going blind from working so long with such small things, breathing all these toxins and shit. That’s where wealth comes from.

I put it back to him, is that what you want to be part of? Saying fuck it, and becoming like the criminals that run this system. He said quietly, “I don’t know.”

I then pulled out the new poster we made with BAsics 1:13, told him briefly who BA is and had him read the quote. He read it out loud and then I asked him to look at the pictures, which he did. I asked what he thought. He stood there quiet for a minute and said, “Damn, this picture hurts my heart.” Looking at the picture of the Syrian child washed up on the beach, drowned to death. I told him that America was responsible for that, they were part of the war, destroying the country that his family was fleeing from to survive. He stayed looking at it, and I told him he was as responsible for that child and his family as he was for his own family. He just answered, “Yeah, that’s true.”

I pointed to the pictures again and said, “Look man, all this shit is not necessary and it all comes from the system that we are organizing to take down. This is something you need to step into and be part of. The world could be a whole different way but we have to fight for that.” He seemed unsure and I said more about why he needed to be at the picnic on Sunday and asked if getting a ride from the neighborhood would help. He said he wasn’t sure and seemed like he was moving to head out at that point. I said I wanted to leave him with a question and challenge from BA, the same person who said that quote he read. I said that Bob Avakian says: we have two basic choices... either live with this nightmare of a system, condemn future generations to more of this or worse... if they have a future at all... or make revolution. I asked then, which will you choose? He was quiet, and said, “That’s serious. I have to think about it.” I told him he did and that I wanted to send him a link that gets more into what kind of world is possible. He gave me his number and I told him to keep the poster, I also gave him an extra flyer for his aunt.

I sent him the “What Ifs” clip and I’m going to call him later this afternoon to see if he watched it, also want to send him the one on the Corcoran SHU and talk with him about a ride.

I also spoke with a crew of guys that were getting on the bus (seemed like they were a little older than high school, or were cutting). A couple of them had skateboards and were getting high. The main kid I talked to, who was more interested and said, “I feel what you’re saying,” was wearing a Scarface T-shirt. He also said the main thing he wanted to do was get up out of here, live in the hills with a family and a white picket fence. He talked about hating all the gang divides, he’s not in the life but still gets checked everywhere he goes. “I hate people asking, ‘where you from?’ It ain’t your fucking business and anyway, I’m not into all that.” Their bus was about to come so they didn’t want to watch a BA clip but I did some brief agitation (referencing BA) about the Scarface mentality. The guy who was talking to me was torn because he could see what he was saying was selfish but also had questions about whether it was possible to defeat them. His friends stayed fucking around even when the bus came, but he got a bit more serious and gave me his number to send him the clip.

Other people in our team also talked to a 24-year-old kid from the neighborhood who was not in the life. He got a flyer and turned back around to get more, he said, “Give me some more of those, I’ve got some people who I want to share this with.” He lives in the area and said he thinks a lot about revolution. He mentioned knowing about a Black nationalist group that was active a few years ago, that he’s been thinking about the old Black Panther Party and revolution. He said, “I try to tell people they need to be aware and informed about what’s going on, but people don’t want to listen. They’re not interested, think it doesn’t concern them, but they need to hear this.” Someone on the Tour used the posters with him to show quotes from BA, illustrating what we’re up against that people are resigning themselves to this but here’s BA saying, “No, no more!” Talked more about who BA is, what he came out of and the work he’s done... but also what we don’t have in terms of the thousands of people taking this, what we’re doing with the National Tour and the need for him to step into this. (The person who had this discussion should fill this out more... there were important things, including he said you have to have food but really people need to get down with the content of what you’re doing.) We got his info and he took some materials. This was important.

We talked briefly to a Black woman, in her 30s/40s who read the POAs aloud and stopped at #4 on the point on we “do not tolerate revenge among the people.” She said, “Wow, making a revolution without revenge. That’s going to be hard. A lot of people are going to want revenge.” Unfortunately, she had to move her car at that moment and couldn’t talk much more but I did say this was a question the leader of the revolution, Bob Avakian, has done a lot of wrangling with. In opening the conversation, I told her about the Tour and she said she was surprised when I talked about what is missing are the people. She said she would think that a lot of people would be getting with this now because so many people are tired. She gave me her info to send a BA clip and she took a few flyers to get to people she knows and said she is interested in coming Sunday.

A few other people like this, people who were in a hurry, but interested.

We also talked for a while (perhaps too long) with some of the drinking guys, both some of the older folks and some of the younger folks more in the life. As I said above, some stubbornness among the younger dudes (in their 30s or so) about leaving their neighborhood, about the possibility of revolution, etc. We struggled over the POAs, including #3: “We fight for a world without borders...” Mainly this is about the imperialist borders, but also includes these bullshit borders among oppressed people here. Among the older dudes up the block, a lot of struggle about why they need to step into this. Talked to one guy who came up and said, “I want that book you all had yesterday.” I showed him BAsics and he wanted to get it. He spent 27 years in prison, and said he reads. He argued for religion and personal responsibility but also knows we need real change. He got BAsics and said he would give $10 on the 1st.

Importantly, talked with the guy who I wrote about yesterday. He came over to where we were to get BAsics and brought his $10. He also had been thinking about other people we should reach and told me about this meeting that he knows about with progressive Black nationalist forces. He said he would look into it more and see if he could get me a contact number. He also said that he’d taken a picture of the picnic flyer and sent it to a couple friends, one of whom wrote back, “Wonderful.” He can’t come because of work but he said that he would follow up with them. He also wrote that he’s begun reading BAsics. And then this morning wrote that he distributed the flyers about the picnic with the POAs on the other side.

This is someone who was more reticent to consider himself a part of the revolution but is actively working with the revolution and thinking about the problems we are facing and how to solve them. This is an important example of the process of people working on the problems of the revolution, an essential form of organizing people into the revolution.

Also, we’re trying to meet this morning with the guy who took the flyers out to the rap concert to interview him and he’s working on a statement for the picnic. He’s also figuring out how to bring speakers he has to the picnic.

There is more to report but this is already quite late...

Points of Attention for the Revolution

“On POA #5”

From a young man in Crenshaw who took 10 flyers about the picnic to ask people to come:

“What really resonated with me is that we fight for and search for truth no matter how unpopular, even as we listen to the observations & insights from others. People sometimes don’t like to hear the truth and people gang banging don’t like to hear the truth or want to accept it. Because when they are in what they are in, they can’t. But we have to say it. We need the truth for this to stop. I took 10 flyers to get out to some students and the community, to get the word out because I’m fighting for what you guys are fighting for. I want to see a change.”

“Field Reports” From Taking Out the Revolution, April 26

| revcom.us

Over the past several days, the National Tour has continued to go out in Los Angeles, working to draw people into the revolution. From a South Central neighborhood, to campuses, to phone banking: finding the ways for masses of people to come into and work on the problems of the revolution. The Tour is building right now for a picnic this Sunday. We’re including reports from their work and encounters to help give everyone a sense of what they’re working on and how they’re viewing it, and to foster the widest possible ferment over how to break through.

Growing Pains

From a member of the National Revolution Tour:

I feel that there is a real straining to bring people into being PART of this picnic that is a departure from how we have normally done things. It is one of our weakest muscles & when you start to work that muscle it hurts a little bit, but once we start to do it regularly, we will get stronger at it.

You have to follow up with certain people, struggle with people to get into things and fight for their participation; sometimes more than once. You set up meetings, people don’t show, they call you and say they want to meet but their auntie got sick or their car broke down... could we meet a different day?

And then you meet people who have been taking this out & they are sincere in that; and then they tell you, when can I take you out on a date.

They reschedule BUT they DO want to be part of this, & we are constantly re-setting the terms to fight for their participation; fighting for the Points of Attention. But these people are there and we can’t lose sight of their potential nor of our responsibility to lead that.

And then we put some necessity on ourselves because we don’t always handle all our contradictions appropriately, having long, drawn out conversations or doing too much “chasing of people” rather than unleashing of people to solve the problems of the revolution.

Instead, what we are doing that is new, is trying to bring people through a process, taking it out, learning the questions that come up; being part of a process that writes those questions, poses them; all as part of “figuring out” how we are going to do this whole thing, revolution all the way through, raising objections/criticisms to what we are about & why; even while there is agreement on the 5 Stops and how we lead all of this with firmness, confidence, and big arms and a LOT of science. So I myself am having more of an appreciation for BA’s science & what he has developed in terms of solid core with a lot of elasticity and the OHIO.

Some key things we are working on with this picnic:

1. We are trying to figure out how you actually bring people into the whole of a production—provide a sweeping enough view & particularities where people can take initiative & responsibility and people see how THIS is part of building a movement for revolution.

2. How do you keep returning to people; the problems of the revolution; as part of waging ideological struggle? IE the woman question, using the revolution for personal gain... And how does returning to & strengthening people’s understanding of the “material basis” for these Points of Attention of the Revolution motivate people now to “go against the grain” in fighting for these Points of Attention.

3. Breaking out of let’s us do it all because it’s “easier,” rather than taking the time and finding the forms to bring others into this; and waging the short, sharp struggle necessary to bring them into it.

Phone Banking and Getting Into Things

From a member of the National Revolution Tour:

I did some phone banking to a few people who I had mainly gotten their numbers from the day people were out in Crenshaw/Slauson during Nipsey Hussle’s funeral procession. The first woman I called had actually found out about us through a flyer put up around a prominent art college with tabs to tear off from with the Revolution Club’s contact info. She had texted us through that, telling us she was interested. It was brief text messaging, then she stopped responding. I finally decided to call her after a few days and when I did she was really glad to hear from us. She said she had gone to our website and checked things out and liked it, but didn’t know how to contact us or get involved further. I asked her what attracted to her to the flyer and she said, “I’ve been thinking about these kinds of things and I feel like I have no one to talk to about it.” I explained to her how there’s a lot of people like her who are looking at the world and thinking that “shit is fucked up” and don’t know what to do about it, but she emphasized how she’s seeing the world, how fucked up it is and wants to do something about it. She also said, “I’m really interested in this.” I told her about the picnic and what it’s all about and she said she would come, and I also posed to her that we want to prepare the picnic together with others as part of new people stepping into the movement for revolution and building a revolutionary community and culture, and that means bringing a dish, helping set up, or anything they are capable of doing to make the picnic possible. She said she’d bring food, and also asked, “Do you know how many people are going so I know how much food to bring? And what kind of food should I bring?” I told her however much she wanted to bring. She’s looking forward to talking more, though she did send a text later on saying she’d be busy all Sunday actually and can’t come anymore, but would like to know about future events.

I also talked to another woman who I met at Crenshaw/Slauson during the Nipsey Hussle funeral procession. When I met her, I walked up to her to give her a flyer and she says, “Oh you’re with Bob Avakian, yeah I know Bob Avakian, I used to run with ya’ll all the time!” When I asked “What happened, how come you stopped?” She said, “I’ll have to tell you that another time!” and she took the flyers and was happy to give me her contact. When I called her she explained how she was involved seven years ago and dropped a name of someone who has been in the Revolution Club for a while. I invited her to the picnic and then asked if she read the material. She said she read a little, and then I asked her again why she stopped being involved. She kind of skirted around it saying she was dealing with personal issues, but then as we were talking more and I posed to her the two choices, she was like, “OK. You wanna know why I stopped coming around? I got so discouraged and dismayed. Like, I was in it, running with ya’ll all of the time and we would go to the high schools but no one gave a fuck! And I thought to myself, ‘If they don’t give a fuck, then why am I here every day putting all this energy into this!?” So I broke it down for her and said something along the lines of “Look that’s real. You look at the world and what’s happening and you see people aren’t doing shit about it and you wanna smash something. And there is a lot of people who do care but are caught up in a lot of bullshit, whether it be the Democrats, or American chauvinism, or doing for self, identity politics or relying on god. Etc.” Basically walking through all the mental shackles that people have as a result of living under this system, and part of what this national tour is out to do is break people out of those mental shackles and bring forth the reality that there is a way out of all this madness and really put revolution on the map. She “mhhm’d” and said “Yes!” to all of the mental shackles I was laying out, especially the one on individualism. I also said how it can be discouraging too when you have a highly developed leadership, science and strategy but you don’t have the masses of people, and how that’s been a setback for quite sometime now mainly because we really haven’t been putting the problems to people and is what we’re set out to change, to save the communist project, and that it’s also not going to change without people like her stepping in. She also asked about plans of action in which I told her about HWCW and the film. I then told her about being a part of bringing this picnic together as part of forging a revolutionary movement to emancipate humanity and she also said she would bring a dish and asked how much and what kind of food. She was really glad I called and said, “You know what, it’s about time I get back into it.”

One of the last guys I talked to was also from Crenshaw/Slauson on that day. He said he had gotten one of our emails or something and watched the clip from BA on the gangs. He really liked the clip and talked about how important leaders like him are and compared him to Zapatista and Pancho Villa, but also explained how when leaders like that die, the movement also dies and how do you keep it going. He also explained how important it is for us to come together because of this and form something new, something like the Democratic Party. He was getting a phone call from his mom, but then I called him back and I explained to him how important it was for him to recognize the necessity of leadership and the leadership he sees in BA and why that’s important because of what BA has done, and then I also got into the role of the Democrats and how all elections under this system and the Democratic Party are “BEB.” When I told him what BEB was, he started laughing and saying, “Oh my gosh teenagers these days with all their lingo and stuff!” I then gave an example how a lot of good-hearted people are into Bernie Sanders even though he says he’s not for open borders and quoted Bernie on what he said recently on why he wasn’t for open borders, and then compared it to Point of Attention number 3 and then asked him what he thought about that. He responded, “Wow that makes me really happy. That makes me really happy that there are people doing something like this. That really brings music to my ears.” He then continued, “Things like this are not just a phase but are a part of your life, we all bleed the same at the end of the day no matter what color we are, we’re all human. My parents are from Mexico and when I was 16 I witnessed my father being taken away by I.C.E. and another time I’ve been held at gunpoint.” I asked if we could record his response to this POA when he’s at the picnic and then he also said he would bring food and be a part of anything the picnic needs to be brought together. He then mentioned, “I work with film and I also do photography, so I’m down if you guys ever want to do a collaboration. I made a documentary on what happens after deportation and I did it on my dad. I made it so I hope that people don’t have to go through what I go through.” I explained how heavy his story was and how millions of people go through that and why, and basically walked through the 5 Stops and how that can’t be reformed under this system and how much of an outrage it is the way that Trump is demonizing and brutalizing immigrants. He told me he’d send the link to the doc (which he did and it was very good) and when the conversation was ending he was like, “Don’t worry I won’t hang up! I want to keep talking to you! We can keep talking!”

Challenging People with the 2 Choices

We went to some restaurants yesterday—we summed up the importance of agitation around the “No More Generations” and posing two alternatives... live with all this or make revolution and this potluck being part of that... And then on this basis, people dividing themselves out.

We felt we had to sharpen up these points after people said, “ I donate to a lot of things already.” They were donating to church programs, youth programs, etc. So we did have to delineate why this isn’t just another “stop the violence program” or doing some good things, “we wish you the best...”

The struggle doesn’t have to be on everything but it does have to be around the two choices. Live with all this or make revolution.

Some people who read the flyer about the picnic, were asking, wait what is this?

In other words, I think it makes sense to us. But for other people who read it for the first time; it’s not very clear. Partly because people are in their own frameworks and partly because we don’t enough jolt them out of their frameworks & hit people where they live...

In other words—are the people getting this flyer about the picnic feeling like—damn I have to be there. I am wondering if this agitation about “NO MORE” should be worked into flyer in the headline—“No More Generations” quote, with the two alternatives.

Points of Attention for the Revolution

You’ve read this article and now you need to be part of making sure revcom.us is able to make an urgently needed leap and transformation.

This is the text of the flyer being passed out at the Revolutionary picnic in Los Angeles on Sunday, April 28—and beyond.

The Plan to Advance the Revolution in MAY

Welcome to the National Get Organized for an Actual Revolution Tour.

If you want to radically change the world... if you want to make revolution... then you are in the right place. Here are some questions and answers.

What problem is the National Revolution Tour trying to solve?

We need a revolution. Any other solution will just keep the same horrors going on. And we have a lot of what we need to make revolution. We have the science, the strategy and really great leadership in Bob Avakian (BA). But we don’t have nearly enough people to really make this revolution known and growing.

We need to organize thousands of people in this next year, from different places and backgrounds. And, millions of people need to know that there is a movement for an actual revolution. To get this going we need to spread the word of this revolution—in big ways and small. When people see the signs of the revolution and the people with the T-shirts representing, that starts to make the possibility of an actual revolution real for millions of people.

This past month, we’ve been learning better how to do this. The Points of Attention are one big way that people learn what this revolution is really all about, start to change what they are about, and get organized. We need to keep doing that. And we need to do more.

How will we go to the next level?

This next month the National Get Organized for an Actual Revolution Tour has a plan.

First, we’ll keep spreading the Points of Attention, the “5 STOPS,” and the new “No More Generations” poster everywhere. We can do this wherever we go.

But we also have plans to do five other big things, which are at the end of this flyer.

At the end of the month, we want to come out with three accomplishments:

1) real impact by the revolution not just in LA but all over the country.

2) many new people organized into the revolution, doing things big and small, including forming and joining Revolution Clubs.

3) real organization in LA with people who are committed on different levels as they move forward in their understanding, continuing to spread the word about the Tour and revolution in many different ways.

The revolution needs everyone who wants a different world—your ideas, your work, your struggle. Together, we can change everything.

The Plan to Advance the Revolution in MAY

When we accomplish these 5 things, we can make a real advance in organizing the movement for an actual revolution in Los Angeles—the first leg of the National Tour. This will set a direction and pace for the whole country

1) We will show the filmed speech of Bob Avakian in the neighborhood of Slauson and Crenshaw on the weekend of May 11-12. This will let many more people learn about and be part of the revolution. We will invite all different kinds of people from all over the city to come to this.

2) We will do a big program on revolution at UCLA involving students and people from the community.

3) We will spread the revolution in California. We will send teams of experienced and new people to organize people in Inland Empire, Orange County, and northern California.

4) We will raise funds from many different people in many different ways.

5) We will hold a big event for the whole city on the weekend of May 25-27. A program where the revolution and its supporters all come together, live-streamed to people around the country.

During May, the Los Angeles Revolution Club will meet
every Sunday afternoon from 3 to 5.

"Collectively" Making Banana Pudding (!)

| revcom.us

From someone who is part of the National Revolution Tour

We met a woman who wants to be a part of the revolution. She’s on disability and is going to make banana pudding for the picnic, but does not have the resources or ingredients to make it. So we put the problems to others that we’ve been meeting. We put it to one guy who ran into the grocery store where we were talking to him and brought the aluminum foil. We went to another grocery store and got out the POAs, putting the challenge of the two choices to people. We also brought out a sign with the list of ingredients she needed to make the pudding, and small flyers of the ingredients. We were only out for about an hour, but somebody donated twenty dollars, and another person set down his grocery bags next to us after we talked to him and went back into the store and brought out some sugar and eggs.

There was also a guy next to us who was set up, who worked with a nonprofit for animals. As soon as we came up, he asked what we were about. I showed him the sign of the POAs and told him that were organizing for an actual revolution to put an end to the 5 Stops and that we have two choices, and that we have the leadership and the science, but what’s missing is people like you. When I showed him the Constitution he laughed and said, “Oh my gosh, you guys are for real!” He told us that he was a DACA person from South Korea, and went on talking about the gangs and the oppression of women and how much he admires strong women for what they have to go through. He told us he makes music and poetry so I posed to him, “Do you want to write a poem based on the Points of Attention and come read it at the picnic?” He said, “I knew you were going to ask me that!” And enthusiastically agreed to. After he packed up his stand he came up and stood with us and held the sign of the POAs. He also took part in making a video on suggestions on how to make a pitch to people for donations which we put up on Instagram.
